Say i took some vocals, like a poem from a movie, and sampled it. Legal, Illegal?? anyone know? Does it depend how long the vocals are etc etc?

I know some people in Australia wanted to remix something without permission so they were only allowed to sample 7 seconds (I think) of the song. So I know you can use sample copyrighted material but it would possibly depend on the country you're in as to how much you can sample.
For those Australians who might remember it was "You're the Voice" and it was for one of the anti-globalisation movements.

heh
I did a set once at an Air Cadet Easter piss-up, and one of my m8's kept requesting the "How tall are u private!.." from Full Metal Jacket, so I put it on and it was fucking hilarious (over a reasonably lame tune, I wouldnt spoil a beast with it), i'm not sure if i'd do it again tho. To be honest you could probably get away with it as long as its not in a club or ur not real famous.

id say if your going to get the track pressed up and released then youd definately need clearance especially if its a big hollywood film! but if its just your own personal copy then id say no cos unless your a uperstar DJ then its most likely that it wont be heard by too many ppl! if it were pressed on white labels then id say you wouldnt really have to unless its sales picked up and looked as if it would be massive, if that happened then id start very quickly to get the samples cleared before i got sued!

I don't mean to sound nasty but you asked a question ... you got an answer, don't say we got it all wrong
