4 band is generally all you need. it is silly they didn't provide the option to have an 8 band, but why do you need an 8 band EQ? do your sounds need that much tweaking?

yes for solving masking problems 4 should be enough, but to adjust and colour the sound I usually use extra bands..

why dont u just double up on EQ units then?

there is also an eq on the vocoder with up to 32 bands.

I guess propellerheads thinking is that people can just chain units together if they want more. It does start to fill up the screen though, even when using combinators and such. It'd be cool to have an 8 band (or even a true four band parametric, where all four bands have selectable types - e.g. high-pass, low shelf, parametric. As it is, there are only two parametric EQs per unit).

I think the main way they expect you to do it in Reason is to use low/high splits and then eq from there. Basically as many bands as you need. Load up one of the mastering presets like the 4-band compressor and swap out the compressors with eq. Then save it and bam.... use it whenever you need.

anyway, this is a non-issue. use ur head or dont produce.

Yep I guess chaining eq, or splitting signals, would solve the issue. Even though I like the daw so far, and for sure there is a lot of potential to get creative through the back wiring..

Gotta be careful with using the vocoder. Switching from band to band changes to tonal characteristics of the sound for some reason, but I use it for just that! I find a band that I like first then play around with the shift knob for more tonal control. Really adds some more color to the signal. Then go about in the EQ section to either boost or decrease color in certain freq ranges.


I used to wonder about the whole 2 band eq thing myself but then I realized what kind of program reason is. For one, it's a closed system which means no plugins but the beauty of that is you won't get bogged down or thinned out with having too much. In a lot of cases, retraining from having lots of gear will increase productivity. Then I realized if you got an EQ with a shit ton of bands, lots of people will just use them without even thinking leading to 'over EQed' sounds. I'm pretty sure propellerheads wants producers to think more on the music side rather than the technical side (although reason can get VERY technical, go see reason101.net for some of that). They don't want people to get that too much plugin syndrome where people can't decide which damn filter or eq to use just for one simple job. They just want people to be making music and keep the fun in it, and that's what Reason is good at.
