Another nice tut as usual. I notice the percussion is very simple but one thing I wish you covered a bit better was how you tune your percs. I still haven't found a good/efficient way to do it in FL. Does the sampler your using read out the key when you load samples into it? In FL I have to use directwave, scan the sample, then I compensate by moving it onto key. Idky but it never sounds right for some reason.

For tuning percussion it's really quite simple. You just need to figure out the root note of the key of the track you're working on. In the case of trance it's usually the single hammering bass note you're using. The sampler i'm using (which is free and should work in FL) doesn't read anything but it allows you to tune a sample by semitone, so that if I choose a percussion sample that's tonal and sitting on the note of E, and my tracks root note is C i'll then detune the sample by 4 semitones (bringing it down to C as well).

It's easy enough to do it all by ear.

Its the easiest thing in the world with FL studio.

Click on the sample to bring up its properties, press alt-e to load it in Edison.

Right click the sample in edison, go to regions, then detect pitch reasons. It will give you the root note, and all you have to do is change the root note on the sample itself.

Its a nice quick way of checking what the key is.

Nice tutorial. I think one of the best things about it is the articulation, and quick simple reasons/explanations, that so many tutorial makers fail at doing.

The interesting thing (for me at least) I have the same opinions and methods of working (like hi loops should be super subtle, like a sparkle on top or that reverbs should be kept similar to create "room" cohesion). you also sound at lot like me, LOL, just with a hint of home counties in there.

Southerners unite!

Alright! Thats awesome how quick it is plus it actually sounds right now.
I was never able to do it right in directwave no idea why but now you can tell its actually pitching on tune.

Man that is great now I really don't need melodyne anymore what a PITA. I pitched a perc to the bass first, then my kick, and I can't believe how much better it sounds. I'm not an idiot though I knew that function was there and remember trying it on a short hat and it wouldn't detect the pitch. I loaded another and same thing. But apparently if the sample is too short it won't work. At least I know now thats why it didn't work years ago when I orginally tried it.
