Looking to buy a pari of speakers/monitors for DJing, 8" monitors are too much??

Hi guys,

So my 4.1 Klipsch "computer" speakers that I've been using for my room died on me a week ago after 9 years

I've been looking to either fix that or buy some nice monitors??

I went to Guitar Center yesterday and heard the Yamaha HS80M and instantly felt in love with it

Do you guys think I'm going overboard to buy a pair of 8' monitors for DJing in a small room? I'm considering using them for producing later down the road but for now they will be just for DJ

I really don't want to spend the $$ for this route!!!

Maybe I should just go back to some really nice Klipsch again? or maybe get some 5' or 6' KRK Rockit?

Tell me what you guys think??

Thanks,
Jack

For a small room, 8" woofers can cause a lot of problems with unwanted reflections & introduced into a completely untreated room, is only gonna cause problems imo.

I would look to repair your current speakers first or failing that purchase a similar setup. Production monitors are arguably the most important link in the chain (along with DAC converters) therefore the job of choosing a pair should not be taken lightly & you may find yourself stuck with the yamahas when you want to increase your budget or buy something smaller with a 5/6" cone instead.

Hope that helps & good luck with it

Thanks for the advice mate

You don't want to get overboard with 8" monitors unless you have proper bass traps in your rooms to support the bassiness of it. Given that it is a small room, a 6" speaker is recommended since it will more than pump enough juice for your room, but also not drown it out in bass.

An important question you need to ask is do you want nearfield monitors or not? Nearfields are meant to be listened at a specific distance from your head and are meant more for producing, so it might not be ideal if you are just DJing in your room. I personally would just recommend the rokits as they do the job and sound good for DJing. You don't really need pristine sound reproduction, but simply something to allow you to feel the music out you are playing that aren't "consumer" speakers.
