What are the factors you consider when voting for a DJ?

Hi all,

I am curious to know, what are the factors that determine your votes for a particular DJ, on a poll like DJ Mag or TA top 250.

Is having good productions enough to warrant a vote or must you have heard the DJ's sets/live performances? Does it go like 'oh I have heard many good tracks by this DJ on ASOT/TATW,I will vote for him/her'. Looking at poll history, it seems people value productions more than the actual DJing.

Any non-music related reasons for voting? Undying loyalties to any DJs?

How important are old emotional attachments? I raise this because when I glance at many trance listeners' choices, they would list 4 trance DJs and 'Tiesto'. Some would even have Markus Schulz together with Tiesto (Dark techy prog vs commercial house/electro). How many of u would vote based on old productions or sentiments alone?

Just looking for some honest opinions. Would be interesting for research.

Cheers

The only time I've ever voted for a DJ was to get a free download from Trackitdown, and I only voted for some local DJs who were never going to get anywhere near the Top 100.

The funny thing is, I always think it's stupid to vote for a DJ or judge a DJ based on their production work, and I am forever chastising newbs for conflating the two. And yet I get excited about seeing DJs based entirely on their production work - I'll have never heard a set by them, but will go along entirely because I like their tracks, and usually hope to hear some of those tracks in their set.

I know what you mean, but I try to vote for DJs I've actually seen that put on an incredible show. This year the DJs I've seen that really impressed me were Sasha, Layo & Bushwacka!, Donatto Dozzy, and Anja Schneider.

Skill, and that's about it. In the handful of times I've voted, I think only one of the DJs I chose (Ben Sims) ever made a top-whatever list. The rest are far too eclectic to even register on the mainstream radar, which is essentially what these popularity contests are.

I am going to come out of my neutral position and say FUCK YEA to this Markus has been a clubroom monster for those who haven't seen him live

But I respect the rest of u for voting for DJs that u have seen live, for the unknowns that u love. But it seems u are the minority

Which is why it's basically pointless voting. These polls are just popularity gauges, and I don't like popular DJs.

I only vote for DJs that advertise with banner ads on Tranceaddict.

Its kind of tough to say. I mean, this year I voted Sander van Doorn #1 because who could resist? He's a likable guy, he's putting out banging tracks AND mixes, he's been to Atlanta 2x this year and both sets were just out of this world impressive. He's consistent, and he's just awesome. I'm partial to Deadmau5 because of his sound, and who could not want to put him in the top3 for single handidly reshaping an entire genre?

So, I guess to answer your question, its music/mixes, production/tracks, persona/dj character , and whether I personally know/follow/like the dj.

In this case...

SVD #1

I base my decision on how good the DJing is. Not productions.
