If you mean the knob next to the instrument name/tab on the beat sequencer, no.

However, (IMO) you still should use the mixer for controlling your levels. You think mouse mixing is hard? Try mouse mixing 20 instruments with knobs instead of faders, and no indication of volume. Mixer channels are the shit for mixing, that's their job.

There's a third volume control too.

The MISC section has levels adjustment, the volume on this one is at 100% when its only half way. It also works independently of the others but its handy for very soft sounds.

This is kinda off-topic, but do you guys (who use FL) normally turn down the volume on the vst-instruments before doinga anything in the mixer?

I've found that more often than not, VST's are insanely loud straight out of the box, so to speak.

And this is even way more off-topic, but have you guys noticed that ALOT of commercially available soundbanks/preset collections are clipping like crazy going OUT from the VST?
I have especially noticed this on Sylenth1.
What's the deal with that?

This is the only way I really controlled volume, actually. The song I'm working on now is the first time I've ever used the mixer volume controls and it's making a hell of a difference.

Agreed, though, I don't know why they start out so damned loud. Sylenth and Nexus hurt my ears when I load them up.

To answer OP's question, the way I understand it, the volume knobs on the side of the VSTi control the pre-mixed volume, whereas the mixer volume reduces the sound after it's run through effects? That's how I understand it.

Yes, but I was assuming with no effects. SOmetimes I use the volume knob for overdrive, but if all you want to do is lower the volume of a sample it's the same

I have noticed a lot of synth patches are really loud, but I still do it with the mixer track unless I'm working with distortion or compressors on the mixer channel.

It's not actually clipping.

Me personally , i dont really touch the mixer volume until i have the section or song built. It can get kinda frustrating if your adding alot of volume automation to instruments ,and start messing with the mixer volume before your done...at least that's what works for me ...

I hardly ever touch the sample volume knob, but I'll always drop the mixer channel volume so that its roughly where it should be.

From the beginning I make sure things are kinda in the right place, just makes mixing it later on easier.

Sample volume knob is useful for minor tweaks (say its too loud or too quiet). Once you get it to an OK level then you adjust it from the mixer.

Really? Cus the meters are red as a dogs dick and the sound is slightly more distorted than if i lower the gain. Even though it's not clipping going IN to the mixer it could be clipping going OUT from the synth. Or is my intel bad?
