STEREOLAB LAUNCH-Steve Porter w/Brad Copeland Sept 6th

Steve Porter
(Fade, Balance, Bedrock, Growroom)

Steve discovered the world of dance music while flipping through the “Techno” section of the local CD shop. The year was 1996 and young Steve was barely 16. He became enthralled with this new music and began to search it out to learn his own skills. He quickly became his school’s DJ with the soul purpose of bringing new sounds to kid’s ears instead of mainstream hi hop and alternative that owned most of his classmate’s knowledge of music. He DJed every school function and the odd wedding. His freelance DJing continued through that summer of 1997. Late in ’97, Steve took a position the town’s local record shop, Growroom, and became heavily involved. This further expanded his musical palette and gave him the best access to the music he loved. His DJing continued to develop as he picked up mixing with ease. He played every party possible to work himself into the system. By the Summer of ’98, Steve’s passion grew beyond just DJing as he began purchasing equipment to make his own tracks. With no musical training, he began to put together tracks purely on observation and study. Later that year, as his DJing was reaching an all time high throughout the local club and rave scene, 4 demo tracks found their way into Chris Fortier’s hands. Chris immediately phoned up to ask for acetates. With Steve being barely 20 years of age, Chris recognized his talent and brought him under his wing. These 4 tracks were polished and released in the summer of 1999 on Fade Records, Steve’s new home. Steve quickly became noticed with top DJs such as Sasha and John Digweed playing the tracks. The second release was titled “Sensor’ and “Mindless” and took Steve to another level. To date these two tracks have made their way onto 10 compilations including Anthony Pappa’s NuBreed CD for Global Underground. Riding this wave of success, many labels from around the world began seeking Steve to remix tracks for their labels. He has since created some of the classic remixes of 2001.

For the past two years, Steve has made a huge mark with his unique twist of techno edged house productions. Many of them licensed to major compilations. On the DJ front, his residencies in Boston at Rise and Hibernia continue to thrive and he has just added a new residency at another Boston club, Axis. Steve is also a proud member of the Balance Promote Group DJ Agency.

With over 18 remixes already to his credit, and three new hotly tipped singles coming in 2002 for both Fade and Bedrock and an artist album eminent, Steve is on a mission this year. A mission to play music. We hope you are listening!

Brad Copeland
(Stereo, Surface, Canada)

At 24 years old, Brad Copeland is a rising star of the Canadian dance music scene. Already known across the country for his impeccable mixing, his tough and pumping sound, and his energy as a performer, Brad has shown his potential with a blend of talent and commitment.

From humble beginnings playing to small crowds at Ottawa's Icon nightclub, Brad has grown through a hugely successful residency at the legendary Atomic to host his own night at The Well - a night which has been consistently packed since its opening. Crowds at The Well come again and again to hear Brad's unique sound - a diverse fusion of progressive and techno with traces of house and the occasional tribal beat - and this sound has caught on with audiences across Canada. Brad is recognized in Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Toronto and Halifax for his responsiveness and sensitivity to the dancefloor.

Brad's talent has been recognized not just by the dancefloors he's packed, but by internationally renowned members of the dance music community. Brad has opened for such luminaries as Nigel Dawson, Dave Ralph and Anne Savage, and was asked personally to join both Max Graham and Sandra Collins on their recent Canadian tours. Max was recently quoted as saying "Brad is one of the few DJ's that really understands the needs of dancefloor, and he pushes the limits of his sound with confidence. I'm constantly trainspotting him."

With a musical passion that goes beyond mixing, Brad has shown budding promise in production with "LAX", "Encounters", and a scorching remix of Max's "Shoreline", all of which have been charted and played by international DJs. He is working constantly to hone his skill, and has two new songs in the works for the new year.

And aside from his boundless talent, skill and potential… Brad is always approachable, always smiling, and just about always bouncing around behind the decks, giving him a unique and refreshing energy. Brad is a warm and friendly person, and a promising DJ with an undeniable spark and a very bright future.
