Hey guys,

Sorry for the thread spammage, but I had a quick question here. I'm on a quest to find some nice crisp toms or percs of some kind which fit well in the mid to high bass range.

Has anyone had good results by taking a high tom and transposing it down? I find this doesn't give me exactly what I want. Same goes for transposing a kick drum up and playing with the start/decay parameters (in Live's Impulse).

If you know of any good sample packs that include what I'm looking for, please don't hesitate to point me in the right direction. I have only a couple of the Vengeance packs, and they only seem to have the higher toms.

I used the shit out of Thomas Penton's sample pack (the toms specifically). Make sure your on complex for the warping as "beats" doesn't seem to correctly transpose past +/- 2

for kick drums, tuning in ableton seems to shift the sound a lot, each algorithm doing something slightly different. I personally just try and find a better kick, use the spectrum analyzer to see what key it's in and go from there.

Also a few synths have some good toms, Sylenth has one called DR SynTom (or something like that). take the reverb off, add a transient designer to it and you'll be good to go for that big room house sound.

Some of the Wave Alchemy packs have plenty of toms - check em out

Can you elaborate on how you do that? Do you just look up the frequency where the bulk of the kick falls and match it up to the closest note?

Some of you guys strongly need guidance when it comes to sound design.

I think that I should make a video and show you how to do it with sylenth1 into ableton. All of it, kick, hats, snares, claps, etc... I'm not a big fan of that synth but had to use it for a client so I'll show you when I have the time.

My bad on the ambiguity and not posting an example sound. I'll get better at that eventually.

However, after a few people pointed out that some of these sounds reside as presets in a synth, I went over to good ol' Sylenth and sure enough browsed through some presets I had previously overlooked only to find something close to what I'm looking for. I'll need to tweak and maybe learn to roll my own, but it's definitely forward progress.

It would seem it's not quite a tom I'm after but a very nice plucky/percussive high bass sound that I'm sure Sylenth could handle. Someone mentioned Alchemy - I was thinking of grabbin that a little ways down the road on account of reading good things around here. Could be worth looking into.


And yes Lolo, I am lacking in the sound design dept. I have another post on that already lol. Would love to see what you have to share on creating these sounds in Sylenth.

I have plenty of great percs to work with now, along with the perc-ish synth plucks.

I've got a few friends in a band here that do their own production so it's interesting to see the techniques and everything they use, and some of the shit they can get away with. One thing is that it's real convenient having an actual drum kit right there in the studio to pull samples from. Oh you need a low perc that fits in with your track? Tune up the floor tom, put it in the corner, experiment with different mic'ing techniques and you've got a sample perfectly catered to the project you're working on, and not some over-processed piece of shit that thousands of other people use. Need a snare that punches right the fuck through the mix? Oh why don't I just go over here and mic this snare drum. Mute it, accent it, throw it down the stairs whatever. It's beautiful and you can get away with a LOT of processing before the quality degrades. Something to think about especially if you're dropping thousands of dollars on gear and plugins, might be worth throwing down for a small kit and a decent mic.

FWIW Check out the Tactile Sounds TS-808 freebie VST. Might have a bit of what you are looking for. Low/mid/hi toms and congas. It's a great 808 emulation if you like that sound.
