So this is the first time I am not sure what to go with. I know i'm not the only one. everyone seems to be unsure and lion seems to be heading in a direction that isn't really for professionals. ANyone know more about the details and their new direction ?

It seems they are trying to make computers into iphones. In fact i think all their attention is focused on that market which I understand.

It is just unfortunate that their brand will suffer in terms of cachet. I mean there was once a time that you could say without any reservation that if you go into a studio ( real studio ) . you will see a mac, not a pc. I mean there were absolutely no exceptions but I wonder if this will be the same in 2 years.

My brother just bought a new laptop and had to downgrade to leopard because lion was such a piece of shit. I have not tried it so I can't say for sure but if brother has issues with it, kinda makes me hesitant.

Seems like everyone is holding their breath. I think studios will be staying with their current setup for the a rather long time.

Although W7 has been rock solid for me which will ultimately mean I'll probably stick with it for another several years, W8 is rumoured to be designed to work on anything from a touchpad to a workstation.

Can't help feeling there's a pandering to the lowest common (but most profitable) denominator there.

Hard to envision the future when it comes to technology. Tell you what though I will not be installing Lion anytime soon. I'm hoping someone develops viable production software for Linux, or at the very least a bio-electric mind brain interface which materializes thought as digital audio. It seems primitive using these physical tools to create art. I'm sure our great grand-children will scoff at the fact we had to actually turn knobs and play instruments in order to make music. Just kidding we'll destroy ourselves within the next decade, there will be no grand-children.

Macs IMO are great if you have non buggy,and specific software thats known to run smoothy on them.When i got mine I wanted to pull my hair out trying to run Cubase on it.Finally folded and bought a pc.Another issue with macs is developers don't seem to be in any rush to provide mac friendly versions alot of times.But then again who really needs to have the newest synth,daw,ect every six months.If what software you have is known to work well on macs i would buy a mac.

Yea, I don't like that the interfaces are changing. I'm using Windows 7 and I love it! I haven't had any problems with it, it runs well, fast, and for the most part has over achieved as far as my expectations are concerned. Of course its still less than 6 months old, but its loaded with a AMD Processor, 4 gigz of RAM, and a 400GB HD. It HUMS especially when using, Reason, Ableton, and some other programs all simultaneously. The only issue I've had was when using Adobe After Effects, but I think its a buggy program due to the fact I got it off the interwebz. Nonetheless, its self contained and hasn't impacted the rest of my computer so I'm down.

I did have an issue with ReCycle though. It didn't work on Windows 7 and at the time, Reason didn't have a patch for it. I couldn't use it until just recently. Not sure why, but the patch seems to work, although I do have to go back in occasionally and re-run it.

Windows 8 I believe is going to emulate MAC OS LION. and even even though its processes seem to be streamlined for more casual users, I feel that it will encumber certain production methods due to the fact that it will take some getting used to. Afterwards though it will be business as usual. But, I'm sticking with Windows 7 due to its easy use.

Hopefully there will be different "business" version for win 8 (as in 2000/NT period) or at least possibility to switch to Classic-look.

It will be a nightmare trying to teach windows usage to older people at work if it's going to looklike that.

For now I'll stay with win 7 & osx 10.6.8.

As far as I understand the "touch" aspect of Win8 isn't the core OS, rather the "bonus" if you will on top of what is essentially Win7, or 7.5. Desktop users will still have the same user experience as Win7 with hopefully the same stability.

If it kicks off, watch Apple follow suit. Not necessarily a bad thing as they all copy each other and cherry pick the best parts, but it seems Apple is struggling more with stability now rather than design choice.

Ironic, considering how when XP was out it was the other way around.
Legacy support is something that always worries me though. I hate when something new comes out and only works with programs and files that are new as well.

What frustrates me with windows is that every time they get several updates out and work out alot of the kinks they turn right around and pump out a new OS ...Part of me still misses 98 SE...Once they patched the problems it ran like a champ.

98 SE days were awful. If you created a new file on desktop, opened it and then closed it, it crashed the windows background. Then you had to start explorer.exe again.

Cant say i had the same experience , 98SE, XP , & 7 are the better of the bunch.IMO.Truth is they all suck but there's not really a lot of competition to choose from.

Once you find a config that works, it's best to stick with it until the benefits of upgrading are significant enough to warrant the hassle.

For me, Windows 7 works great and runs everything I need. I'll stick with it for as long as I can.
