Anyone take classes at Dubspot?

I know a lot of people say you can teach yourself and they're very expensive - but putting the money aside for second - has anyone taken the DJ classes? did you learn a lot?

They're definitely legit - a good friend of mine helped open it and people really seem to like it, even though it can be a bit expensive.. To be honest though I can tell you that learning the technical side of DJing is not particularly the hardest part to learn, and that picking up the craft, political, and strategic sides of it are more often the key to success. Generally speaking these are all pretty much ignored though, since their importance isn't very apparent and they're more difficult topics to approach. A great book on this subject is 'How To DJ Right' by Bill Brewster. It's one of the few books that really places a lot of emphasis on the philosophy behind the craft, and also has a great intro on the business and political side of it as well.

As a side note I was actually in talks with Dubspot at one point about teaching classes on such matters, but to do so formally would require Business School Accreditation which they don't yet have I'd still love to get a small group together on such topics though, if anyone's interested..

@BradMiller: Thanks for posting, they seemed legit from all the info on their website and youtube videos so I'm glad you were able to confirm that for me. I'm not sure why they would need Business Accreditation for a personal enrichment program. I thought that was only for a school to say they meet certain national requirements and so that those course may be eligible for credit if transferred to another college. And I think on of the levels of the DJ Course (I think level 5) seemed to have at least some info on the business side of things...

@Aspy/aldi - Yeah at least initially I would be doing it for fun and to see if I had had any real skills/potential... and it is pretty expensive like $50/hr for 21 hours. The other benefit would be that I think you can use the lab for free while you're enrolled which is good for me since I don't have any equipment.

I'm leaning towards it because I feel like this would be the best way for me to give dj'ing a proper chance, instead of buying a lot of equipment and then not really knowing where to start or what to do. But it is reallyyy expensive so we'll see....

I recently saw a deal for 50% off a class at Dubspot on Amazon Local (I think the offer was actually through LivingSocial, but I get Amazon emails). It was $62 for a 2 hr 45 min class. Probably not quite what you're looking for, but maybe it would be enough to get some basics or whatever. You might want to keep an eye out for more deals like this in the future.

I briefly thought about it for production but ulitmately decided it was more rewarding to teach myself. If I ever feel the need for a group session they Ableton NYC group meets up monthly, usually sponsored by Dubspot actaully.

I also briefly though about inquiring on teaching advanced controller scripting, either using Javascript in Max/MSP or Live control scripts in Python as I've been working on some very large and secret projects that do both. I have a feeling the interest wouldn't be there.

A friend of ours did the 3 month program and loved it.

She learned a lot and found that they teach lots of different styles they also allow you to use the labs with all of their equipment.
