Marijuana not harmful to the lungs if smoked in moderation

Apparently smoking pot in moderation (around a joint a week) is not harmful to the lungs at all?

ARTICLE

I'm not really a smoker myself, but thought that was a pretty surprising find. I always assumed that inhaling any type of smoke would be harmful to you.

If someone smoked around one cigarette a week it would not be harmful to the lungs at all either. If someone smoked 9-12 joints a day like a typical smoker smokes cigarettes I'm pretty sure it would be harmful to the lungs.

Agreed, but apparently there is a difference and it apparently has to do with the THC in pot.

The findings echo results in some smaller studies that showed while marijuana contains some of the same toxic chemicals as tobacco, it does not carry the same risks for lung disease.

It's not clear why that is so, but it's possible that the main active ingredient in marijuana, a chemical known as THC, makes the difference. THC causes the "high" that users feel. It also helps fight inflammation and may counteract the effects of more irritating chemicals in the drug, said Dr. Donald Tashkin, a marijuana researcher and an emeritus professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. Tashkin was not involved in the new study.

The THC wouldn't help if you were inhaling 9 joints a day...everyday. There would still be inflammation. You wouldn't find any sustained inflammation from one cigarette a day.

The study may be more in depth then the article makes it out to be but from what I read the study doesn't really compare anything. Why not take two health people who have never smoked pot or tobacco and have them smoke one cigarette or joint a week for 20 years and lets see if there is any significant difference in their lungs....I would guess there is none that couldn't be accountant for by differences in the environment they live in.

Yeah the article eludes to the fact that there is a difference between the two but you're right it doesn't explain it.

Like cigarette smokers, marijuana users can develop throat irritation and coughs, but the study didn't focus on those. It also didn't examine lung cancer, but other studies haven't found any definitive link between marijuana use and cancer.

A comparrison of cigs and joints contents.

Now tell me if the possibility of cancer wouldn't arise from typical use matching that of cigs.

There have been two large studies, which have not shown a link between smoking marijuana and cancer rates.

Nobody refutes that weed contains carcinogens. The issue is, why does the presence of those compounds in weed, not lead to cancer? One THEORY, is that the THC actually kills of cancerous cells, before they have a chance to multiply and spread.

But from my understanding of the studies, that was not the focus, they only looked for cancer rates. I think we will see more research in the near future to find out exactly what is happening in the lungs and throat that help marijuana users avoid cancer.
