None of the above. I do it as a hobby knowing that it will always cost me far more than I will ever earn from it.

I do it because I've already had my 15 minutes of fame (well, nearly 20 years of moderate regional success), I've got a great career and family to support my expensive hobby, I love making music, and I love writing music with the many talented singers, musicians, and producers that I've worked with over the years. I'm totally cool with that.

Yeah, but you wouldn't mind get a bit more to support this successful (but local) hobby?

You have to pick one or the other.

That would depend on what other commitments and risks came with it. As you know, I was a professional musician for much of my life and, while it was great living that lifestyle at that time in my life, it's not something I wish to do again. I make music on my terms and my schedule now, and I pretty much lose interest whenever it starts to feel like work (e.g., contracts, deadlines, requests for edits). I deal with that sh*t at my job every day, and music is one of my escapes from that.

Then again, I'm also probably an extreme outlier. I'm guessing that most producers here are much younger and have some ambition to do something with their music. More power to 'em, but that's not me.

So I guess I could give you guys another option like "I don't care and will go with the flow" but this wouldn't really give me any clear view of the direction or perception you have on this subject!

Nothing would be different then is right now, except your share of your sold stuff would be much bigger lol - talking about fairness lol

No contract, you do the way you want it - lets call it "scalable opportunities", you wont more you produce more!!!

Now, that's something I could get on board with. I assume you're thinking of some particular plan here (i.e., the "other" thread, which I haven't really been following, but probably should)???

All I really want is to be able to make music. I have been in situations where it felt like work and the satisfaction from that was relatively fleeting. I could care less about self-promotion, networking, or any of the other non-sense it supposedly takes. I want my music to be good. I want it to sound professional. I hope that it makes people move but the whole notion of making bank or seeing a sea of people waving their hands to it seems so self-aggrandizing that I'm actually loathe to ever get to that point.

Yes Dave, you still will be your own boss and as long as people are buying your stuff then you don't have to worry about anything lol

Cheers,

Darek

Quite simply a dedication to sound, striving to make the best possible soundscape I can, and by this I mean both content and style. If that in turn means some folk wanna dance to it, and maybe get a connection, thats great.

Given that pro after pro in those FM interviews claims there's little money in releasing, and that a good many of them have had considerable sucess, I would be surprised and happy if some dosh did turn up, but I don't think about it.

My day job is 101% focused on money, every moment of it. I have a number in my head every second, which I have to strive for.

Dunno if this will help or clutter up the process but FWIW...

I am a hobbyist and follow the Devin Townsend school of thought. IE: Make what 'you' want to hear and there's probably a few more nerds out there who like it too.

I am not interested in making any money. I just want to make things that someone hears and says "Man, that was freaking cool." And if no one ever hears it, that's OK too. I am personally satisfied with the creative process and my own end result.

That's it for me. Now if i can somehow profit, I'm all for that. But I do not want to deal with the promotion/networking bs, nor the business of music. I want to have a creative outlet aside from writing. That's all.
