I just got my 'studio' set up today for the first time. I am using this as an opportunity to take my music to the next level. One thing I have played around with b4 and wanted to get input if any of you all do this too.

In Fruity Loops you can make pattern of whatever length you want. So you can make a bass intro then another pattern for main bassline, out bass, breakdown bass, ect. I have usually organized my track this way. But this structure seems to limit myself a lot. Once you make the patterns that way, it is hard to create subtle changes. It makes the song come across formulaic and older sounding.

So what I am doing on my next track is creating one long pattern for each instrument for the whole song. Then, I will run the song live, and add to it as I go. As parts come to my mind, I will simply put them in in real time as I envision how it should sound. I have also noticed, in remix competitions, the artist usually seems to have it organized this way. For example, a 2 minute long synth midi or 4 minute long string midi or something.

Anyway, this may seem obvious but just interested on if anyone else does this. I say I am doing it for the next track, but I can already venture a guess that I will be doing it this way from now on. Seems like it will make the tracks more organized and more creative.

I still work with patterns.

One thing I find really useful and conducive (sp?) to my flow is simply right clicking a pattern, and cloning it, and then making adjustments. You can also use the cutting tool in the playlist (looks like a knife) to take a long pattern that you have arranged and chop it up into smaller segments and re-arrange it.

Don't use FL but basically this.

Other tip you could try is put a subtle modulation on some of the channels settings.

The point isn't to "get out of your body", it's to bring awareness to your consciousness while you're experiencing another reality.

I don't know what version you're using, but since version 10, you can make a pattern you've placed on the clip section of the playlist, unique. Then you can make your adjustment on exactly instance without doing the same thing on the 'parent' pattern.

Then, if you want to, you can select all those patterns and merge them into one, non-looping pattern. Hope I made myself clear.

Also, automations are your friends.

Sound like a shitload more work to me, honestly. Every time you want to reuse a pattern from earlier in the song you'll have to dig through the piano roll to find it, copy it, find the exact bar you need it to start on and paste it. Just making a few variations as their own patterns would be a lot quicker, it's not that hard as it is.

honestly , even for like orchestral stuff, you just copy and paste the stuff that is mostly the same and once you have the basic stuff down, you go in and make it on thru composed piece of music. Now that is orchestral music, this is dance music, it is pattern based. Yes the end result should be a track that doesn't sound like a bunch of loops but for the sake of organization, you should keep things grouped into patterns until you have everything regarding the form set/
