too bad they did not use actual photoshop tools like layers paths and masks. Audiosculp and meta synth kinda beat them to the punch and makes the guy reviewing them who is selling his own shit a little out of touch and not so credible. Nothing drastically new. Again with so many products, they stop at the point where it could actually get ridiculous. They are on to something great, but what could of been something incredible is just pretty cool. Like a tanned girl you just shagged tells you she isnt tanned , but from Guatamala. Not even one of the sexy latin countries.

MetaSynth and AudioSculpt are both Mac-only, aren't they?

I'm going to give this demo a go over the next few evenings, and I'll judge it on its own merits (and price).

No, not even close. Alchemy's spectral editing is deeper, plus it has the additive, granular, and VA synthesis. The difference between Iris and Alchemy's spectral engine is that Iris works much like PhotoShop, where you see a visual depiction of the sound as a waveform and/or spectral image, from which you can select the parts of the spectrum that you want to play/synthesize using PhotoShop-like select and lasso tools. It's a pretty cool approach that simplifies spectral synthesis and allows for some really cool possibilities, but the synthesis beyond that is actually pretty limited. You can layer 4 different audio files, each with their own envelope and LFO, but the LFOs are only routable to pitch, pan, and volume, and all 4 layers are routed to a master filter and it has 4 different effects (plate reverb, delay, distortion, chorus) that operate only on the master (i.e., not per-layer). This is all very limited compared to Alchemy's insane modulation and performance capabilities.

So, it's probably worth the $149 intro price, but I can't see them out-competing Alchemy once it goes to $249.

I was thinking that maybe I would, but as you may be able to tell from my post above, the demo left me a little disappointed. I spent about an hour or so with it last night and was pretty surprised at how limited the synthesis is. The good news is that you're unlimited by the source, since you can easily drop any wav file into it and start grabbing the parts of the spectrum that you want to work with, but then you're left with very few tools to shape it. Hopefully they beef that up in some future updates. So, yeah, my GAS has been seriously subdued.
