Hi,

I feel like I am struggling to improve with sound design, leads in particular. I was thinking about taking up some sort of course in it, and have come across all of the usual sites, pointblank, groove 3, sonic academy etc etc.

I see that trancemusicmastery are now doing a 'course' with Adam Szabo about sound design. At 400 dollars, it is still pretty pricey but it seems to focus fully on both sound design and trance music so it seems to be a logical enough choice. Adam Szabo also seems respected enough as a sound designer although it would be hard to tell how much of an input he has on these. At the same time though, you can but one module at a time (there are 6) and the cost isn't that much greater so I'd probably end up doing something like that to see if I like it.

I was just wondering if anyone else has done this here? Or if anyone has any opinions on it?

I know that they have a VIP program and it seems pretty basic, but they have a preview video of this new course and shows some of the sounds that they will be creating. If it does what it says on the tin, I would imagine that it could be worth taking the risk despite the basic VIP material.

My own opinion is that Trance Music Mastery know fuck all about trance. The demo tracks they have on their Youtube channel sound truly appalling, and they did have a preview of their Adam Szabo stuff up several months ago, and it was really, really basic stuff.

The best way to learn sound design is by just fucking about and also reverse engineering presets that you like.

Also, stick with just one synth and learn it inside out.

Rob Papen are supposed to be bringing out a sound design tutorial DVD sometime this year, which I suspect will be most excellent.

Wouldn't hold my breath for that one, it's been a pending release for ages. Though I agree in that it should be good once it does arrive.

I think I read somewhere that would be at the end of July, can't remember where I read it though.

i havent seen much trance music mastery stuff, but i did "get hold" of all the videos from the point blank trance course, of which ive seen around 1/3 of the total video content

IMO this tutorials were really quite basic aimed at the beginner, and also i found them to be short in time and lacking in depth without too much in depth technical explanation.

Im so glad that i didn't take this course as it costs a small fortune

The best tutorial ive seen on synthesis is the synthesis tutorial at Dancemusicproduction.com, http://www.dancemusicproduction.com...ct&product_id=2

This costs £20 and is a 4 hour course aimed at understanding subtractive synthesis (and also basic/intermediate FM) from the ground up. He also covers reverse engineering sounds. Its just great, honestly!
