...all a few years ago used to play proper driving trance, not "hard" trance per se but the real banging 140bpm off-beat bassline 303 squelchy stuff....can't seem to find much of it around anymore. Is it extinct? If not, then who's flying the flag? Everyone seems to be playing slightly softer, proggier stuff these days.

Sean Tyas still does, but he is going towards the slower proggy sound like Sander and Eddie.

There are still lots of dj/producers that play the harder end of what is categorized as "uplifting" trance, as well as the faster and harder tech trance sound, like Simon Patterson (who is also going slightly slower).

I've noticed an odd trend. A lot dj/producers start at a higher speed and a more underground sound towards the beginning of their careers, and as time goes on, they go more commercial and slower. I don't know why.

Slower bpms seems to be more acceptable to the masses. If you want to grow your target audience it's one of the 'tools' you can use. Almost like those other means of making stuff more 'acceptable' like vocals etc.

Especially these days when the general trend is house bpm speeds

Cristopher Lawrance and Sektor V

I think the reason is that there just isn't much good trance music being made at that speed. I would find it really difficult to play a set that started off with top speed trance and carried on like that until the end with current tunes. There just isn't enough interesting music being made like that.

That's not to say that what Eddie / PVD play now is any better of course

Sektor V as said, Bryan Kearney, John O'Callaghan to a certain degree, Giuseppe Ottaviani, Indecent Noise, Ralphie B, Chris Metcalfe... and not many people else. Aly & Fila to some extent but they have been watering down their sound this years. Check this labels:

-Subculture
-Kearnage

This is more high bpm tech trance artists/labels then you have that soft uplifting trance that is like classical music but with a beat ruining it and that is melodically so uninspiring nowadays.

I overheard Simon Patterson a few months ago (don't ask) and he was playing like this. Christopher Lawrence still does it, and his Pharmacy label is pretty dedicated to the sound.

No idea where it's gone or why, I was never much into this kind of trance and don't really miss it.

Sean Tyas has moved into electro and dubstep no way in hell is he playing Progressive trance and house stuff.

I don't really give a shit about bpms but I do miss the hard trance style from 10 years ago. Most high bpms uplifting trance sounds so boring and dull and over-compressed its not funny. The cheap commercial dance that Armin and his gang plays at a lower bpm is even worse.

Higher BPM with 303 squelching, Activa puts out a bit of this sound I think.




These tracks are a few years old but I am pretty sure he has newer stuff that has this kind of sound. Think most of his tracks like this are 138 bpm+. Check out his non vocal stuff on beatport:

Read your review of Random Friday and thats pretty much how I felt about the album too. There were no Brainbows or Black Arrows (though I think after many many listens Cobalt 2.5 comes close with the climax at the end) the entire album as whole was extremely awesome.
