I went into work at Best Buy, this morning, and checked out all of the new music videos that we're playing in my music department. It's rare for us to put up any electronic music, though. Mostly Rap and Rock is all I ever hear. But we've played ATB - You're not Alone and 4 Strings (artist was actually labeled as DJ Encore) - Take Me Away. So I was surprised and ecstatic when I saw that we're now currently playing the music videos for PvD - Time of Our Lives and Armin van Buurren (they spelled it Buren) - Yet Another Day. So having this in mind, questions? Comments?

Well, TOOL and YAD are (arguably) about as mainstream as it gets in terms of proper trance. I still don't think the stuff with less commercial appeal (pertinent examples elude me) will ever crack the charts on a regular basis.

I think trance is getting less mainstream play... I know that PvD and Armin have had videos played, but that's quite commercial stuff, most trance is still only really played on clubs/radio shows...

I'm not sure that it is. I think Rap/R'n'B/Hip Hop has got very mainstream in the last couple of years, and people just dont seem to be interested in trance. I've never seen any Armin vids on TV, and the only Paul Van Dyk video I ever saw a lot of was 'We Are Alive'. But then again, I dont watch a lot of TV.

its funny you say this cause most of my friends into r&b and punk, are starting to apprecieate the genres of house and trance more. i have no idea what got into them but i suppose its a good thing...

its getting more mainstream, well, their trying their best.

in the last few weeks in HMV iv seen Tiesto's Traffic, PvD's Everything but you, three drives carrera 2 and armins yet another day on CD single + edited to under 20mins (so they'd qualify for the UK Top 40)

seems the "big" DJ's are trying 2 get more commercial success in the UK at least.

Lol, I guess that I should've reworded that. Lately, I think that trance ARTISTS have been getting more play. It'll be kind of neat to see what happens. The only thing that I'm worried about is having people come up to me going, "Hey, who's this new guy that sings this song?"

i agree that the big name DJs are becoming more mainstream (Tiesto/Pvd/Armin), but I think the less well-known stuff is still very much underground, as it should be

yeah, jsut remember that to people who are not involved in the club scene at all, what trance they listen to they feel is very new and "underground" for them, even though for us it's yesterday's news.

I randomly walked into a best buy and they were playing Cafe del Marco (after which the lame voice failed to list the proper remix ).

Its definately getting more mainstream, but still pretty niche at this point.

atb has always been mainstream but I've never considered him trance. I view his stuff is more leading towards the euro trance (stuff that I despise) but then again no matter which producers go mainstream with their music and mixes, you will always have the underground scene with those producers.
