Escapade Music Festival review

'Went to Day 1 and Day 3 (Tiesto), totally different vibes and music
Day 1 had both a Tech stage and a Main stage... only caught an hour of Above and Beyond and some of Ferry Corsten on the main stage and A&B didn't disappoint.. hopefully the 16-and-up kids that were there can see that you can mix catchy songs with nice basslines and smooth transitions, unlike more of the rage-n-fistpump and less dancey stuff that is pretty much interchangeable with the radio and mainstream nightclubs, unfortunately.
Loved the smorgasboard of ass-shaking tech house in the tent, from Ryan Labelle to Daniel Dubb to Sebastien Leger, Chus and Ceballos, Mark Knight, Umek to Steve Lawler, that tent was shaking with a star-studded, talented lineup. Only issue I had was that it needed some giant fans to keep it cool once it got heavily populated.
Mark Knight and C&C were particularly good for this festival, Knight more on the funky side and C&C with more tech-latin drums side.
There must've easily been over 10,000 on that first day, and with that there were some lssues here and there, such as bottled-water shortages and the water-logged exits (from the deluge of rain from the day before) as well as not clearly defined parking areas. But in any case the organisers did a very good job utilising the space at the RA Centre, which is a massive community centre located a few kilometres north of the airport.
Huge props for the Piknic Electronik-like Village area that had boutiques, fast food booths and an outdoor food court-like seating area for many. Also props for the live acts, the dancers and the fireworks. There were also plenty of portopotis, with much shorter waits than some Mtl events with similiar type restrooms.
And I can't forget to mention the outstanding job Ryan Labelle has done to give Ottawa something else to dance to beyond edm cheese. Lets hope that tech house tent was as successful to the DNA folks as it was to the many of us who got to dance 12 hours to a lineup that arguably dwarfs many of the big Montreal festivals, even.
As for Day 3, Tiesto delivered one of the worst sets I've ever experienced from him. The beginning of his transition period (about two years ago) still had some dancefloor-moving parts to it but this new stuff is all anthems with no flow, just loud electro noise.
I left about 90 mins into his two-hour set.
And unfortunately a few websites reported that 60 people were assessed for drug and booze-related issues over the first two days, and that 12 were sent to the hospital. Escapade will have to ensure that its attendees stay hydrated, shaded and educated. The DNA Presents folks will have to do its share to make sure those numbers diminish over the next couple of years. They were very very fortunate that the weather wasn't as hot as previous years.
Escapade 2013 was a success (barring any further serious issues). If they can retain the tech stage and improva a few things then it certainly has potential to become a long-term fixture in Ottawa. The festival has moved around the past few years, from the Byward Market to the Ottawa minor league baseball stadium to the RA Centre. If DNA Presents can find some stability with the location and also within its own company (and all indications show that the latter is now occuring) then there should be some very good years ahead for them.
To the DNA folks: keep working as smart as you do hard and eventually you'll really put this festival on the Canadian edm map

Once I took a piss in front of everybody at Stereo. Put the garbage under the mixer, and did it right there while people were dancing and screaming. people thought I was playing with the mixer but I was playing with my zizi. |
