iPod Question

I've had the same shitty 8gb Creative MP3 player I bought when I was a broke-ass student since 2008 or so. Now I'm a rich man, and I want the biggest MP3 player money can buy. None of this fucking "playing MP3s off your phone" bullshit. I just want a straight-up MP3 player, with decent sound and a fuckload of storage. And apparently, in the half decade or so since I was last in the market, Apple have come to dominate the world of MP3 players. This is a problem, because I fucking hate Apple, and more specifically iTunes.

So what I want to know is... if I buy an iPod, do I have to use iTunes? And this may be total horseshit, but someone told me that if you want to transfer anything across to an iPod, iTunes has to convert it its own format (m4a?). Is that true? The person who told me so knows slightly less about computers than my dog, so apologies if this is an outrageously stupid question.

I dunno, itunes is actually a beautiful organization tool. I love how quickly and easily I can fix the 1d3 tags.

Just import your existing library into itunes, what's the big deal?

(Also, I do know that you used to be able to direct transfer shit from your hard drive onto the old old ipods...not sure about now. )

Can you put stuff straight on an iPod without converting it?

You pretty much have to use Itunes. I don't think there is any reason for you to get an ipod considering you can get the same/better sound elsewhere. Although to my knowledge there aren't any players with actual amazing sound.

iTunes is made by Satan. And as far as I know, there's no way of skipping its usage in terms of music synchronizing.

If you can recommend me another brand that make 100gb+ MP3 players, I'm all ears.

You have to use Itunes, but you don't have to convert your music to m4a.

Just transfer your music to the Itunes library and it'll sync just fine.

I have no idea what the market is. And I have like 1/15th of my shit on my phone for on the go so what do I know.

Itunes is quite good if youre ok with software but if youre a folder guy like me its an unessecary hassle.

I've had iPods for a couple of years now, and I can't see myself using anything else.

You may use iTunes, but there are tons of workarounds in case you'd rather use something else. iTunes is horrible in the first couple of days (or weeks, if you're a slow learner), but once you get the gist of it, it's nothing short of awesome. You transfer mp3's, aac's, mp4's, m4a's, m4b's and wav's (not sure about flac's) to your iPod, and it works just fine.

If you want, you may ask iTunes to automatically convert files beyond a fixed bitrate in case you don't see the point in filling your iPod with 720kbps mp3's if you're going to listen to your music outdoors (that's what this person you know may have had in mind). I for one convert everything to down to 128kbps.

The best thing about iPods is that you can sort your files in several different ways, having one separate section for music, one for audiobooks, one for podcasts, and one for iTunes U (these are university lectures offered on the iTunes website, so you can have the best of Oxbridge in your pocket).

I used to hate iTunes myself, but I learned to love it, and I must also say it works fine with a PC (in case you're wondering).

I don't want to transfer my music to the fucking iTunes library. I want to download or render a file and just throw it on my fucking MP3 player without having to go through some shitty program. I move my music around in folders a lot because I do a lot of editing and mixing of tracks, and I'm constantly creating project folders, cutting and pasting tracks, rendering new files. Having to consult some overbearing piece of corporate shite everytime I do any of this is too much. Why should I have to install another program that serves no purpose not already fulfilled by software I already have installed, and just eats up RAM and periodically demands to be updated?

Is there really no alternative?
