Which djs out there have the best ability to pick an appropriate track to play next? Which dj's are awful at this and knock the wind out of the dancefloor?

Listening to Danny Howells 24:7 "Night" cd, its a lot of filler prog but Howells long mixes the shit out of them to where its just one long relentless hypnotic afterhours session. This guy really has an ear for mixing songs in key and generally matching the vibe from one track to the next.

I wont say anything negative about any certain DJ's ability to program because I dont feel like arguing with anyone today. I have a few in mind however

i'd say Gaiser but he does a live set and most is his own productions so the cohesion is obviously easier to achive and when i saw him i was very fucked up so i'd probably 've enjoyed a gospel choir too.

Worst dj i've seen is Moguai his set seemed to build build and then all of a sudden he played a hipster track to kill the mood and repeat. He was warming up tho .

DJs with the best programming and track selection: all the ones who are really successful and don't have to rely on a marketing team to maintain their fanbase.

DJs with the worst programming and track selection: the opposite of the above.

Some of the worst programming I've witnessed was Gabriel and Dresden in 2006, shortly before they broke up. They were playing at Pacha and my brother's g/f wanted me to take her and my bro since she liked Tracking Treasure Down. So I'm like "alright, we'll check them out".

They played a few decent 2006-style prog/electro songs (Sedna is one I can recall) but then whenever they seemed to be building up to something, they'd then kill the vibe with some minimal or some Toolroom-esque by-the-numbers tech house (this WAS 2006, after all). There was no flow whatsoever to the tracks, and their big anthems were thrown in haphazardly without rhyme or reason. Not to mention the bouncers at Pacha were extra dickish that night.

I would say that this also really depends on if the mix was something you heard live or a compilation/studio session.

The usual cast of characters will always appear on mix cds compilations etc.

As for live, the best DJs at this I have ever heard were Sasha, PVD, Digweed, and Carl Cox with the caveat that this was definitely in the 90s to early 00s. Each one had their own unique qualities as well. I wont say who is the worst, but instead I will generally say that some well known producers who I adore, BT being the best example actually, just shouldnt DJ. He probably has gotten a lot better over the years, but for such a great producer his live sets initially left a lot to be desired. J00F would definitely be my favorite current DJ. What I have generally noticed is that great DJs dont lose their mixing or programming skills but just seem to no longer pick quality tracks.

Pretty solid observation.

Top 40 club DJs are in the unique position of having both the best and the worst programming. Worst for maintaining a bumpin' dancefloor, but best for driving up bar sale profits.

Thats because they change the way they aproach to new music.

1) Big names will have a guy to pick a selection for them, accidentally some very inspirational tracks will end on the bin.

2) Some will refuse to open an inbox from an unknown producer, 90% of time they'll save wasting 5 minutes but sometimes a true music gem would pass away unnoticed.

3) Now instead following labels,artists,random searches,listening to strange compilations... they just listen to the promos they receive on the mail, through the same promo pools everyone in the business is using...

I am sure there are a lot of exceptions but it's what it seems since all big djs seem to play the same stuff.
