Her policies are not that different from those of David Cameron's (the current p.m of UK) and/or George Osborne. They believe in the Austrian school of Economics; partial to the U.S -- foes of fiscal libertarians and welfare-state ideologues. Yet, the U.K is, and will remain, a welfare country.
On certain issues, Politics in the U.K are quite different than those of the U.S, but they both have discoverable relations that are well documented. In other words, Obama would have never won an election in the U.K for being too conservative.
Thatcher was divisive and stood for the values of private market practitioners -- abolished unions which brought unpleasant consequences, specially for the common folk of Northern England. Coal miners and factory workers were left unemployed and in conditions comparable to those of Detroit when Thatcher privatized an industry which had been in the hands of an inefficient government. Many jobs left the country.
On the bright side, Thatcher had balls to stand against Gorbachev and the Russian military complex. She brought Britain out of the fog, and criticized the EU for the fiscal embarrassments that we've witnessed in the past couple of years.
