King Is trance dying?

When i first started really getting into electronic music, i was all about trance. The first mixtape/live set i got my hands on was PVD at gallery turnmills like 3 years ago and right after that, i listened to any trance i could get my hands on. Three years later, im still listening to electronic music- i even started spinning but my interest in trance is declining more and more. I live in LA and all the major clubs out here play more house/progressive than anything. Big house DJs draw the largest crowds. I go out a lot and i hadnt heard a trance dj in about 8 months until last week when i saw Armin van Burren at the Myan. It was a cool show but i just never really got that into it. At the end of the night i came to the conclusion that trance is to electronic music as punk is to rock. It follows the same basic equation in almost every song - for trance its a chord or two with a gang of synths and about 140 BPM behind it for punk- its a few chords strung together with the same basic beat and some vocals. There are obviously really good trance songs out there that break out of this mold but i feel like they're becoming rarer. It seems as if the whole scene is moving away from trance and more towards house/progressive/breaks. Look at oakenfold and sasha's new album- none of them were ever trance djs but the trancey elements of their music was removed in their last albums and replaced by breaks. (I know everyone hates Oakenfold but he is one of the most influential people in electronic music) Trance songs are increasingly sounding more and more alike and i think artists are begining to look at other genres to pick up where trance leaves off and people like me are making the same evolution. Its almost as if everyone has been painting with watercolors and are now begining to discover oil paints and sculptures. Does anyone feel as if electronic music is evolving into something different which strays from trance?

Yeah totally agree the whole scene is progressing, as you say it has happened with other genres of muisc.

Time change. Perhaps in a year or two this will be called ProgAddict

i don't agree at all. For me, it has been electronic music since 92. So much has changed since then, but trance has always been around. Style changes, yes, but that's normal. The music always kind of sounds "the same". But one year from now, new songs will still sound "the same" but a lot different from 2 years ago.
For me the biggest change came with the end of the "real" hardtrance (now called Rave) around '96/'97. Tunes weren't produced at 160+ bpm anymore (for whatever reason, I still don't understand).
We had discussions then that now everybody would start listening to D'n'B or later to Speed Garage. But none of that happened.

Trance will be around for MUCH longer. That's my german point of view, I don't know if house can replace trance in the US/UK.

You live in LA, that's your problem..

If you move to a Trance nation like...Holland, Germany, Australia, UK etc. Then you'll know that Trance has been left unscathed.

What REALLY is going to be the death of trance (IF it's gonna happen) is these goddamn cheese artists who put people off from the real trance.

Even in Finnish national tv they've started advertising Ian van Dahl's album as "trance album of the year" ffs...

Trance is dying.

Its suffering from a rare degenerative disease, and its only a matter of time. Parents Techno and House have been informed, and they have decided, when the time comes, to turn off the life support system and donate the organs... and synths.

Cousin prog is distraght, but is just doing the same thing over and over again, its his way of dealing with the loss.

Sister Hardtrance is saddened, but is secretely loving all the extra attention that is being directed towards her.

Brother Breaks is angry and is currently dealing with the news by chopping up every beat that he can find.

NRG, is too young to even grasp what is going on.

Uncle cheeze does what he always does, gets drunk and passes out on top of aunt commercial.

I say when all this cheese crap is out of the world because the main crowd doesn't like it anymore trance will be just as good as usual. Today trance still is made, but less than before I think. So when the hype is over, the so called "scene" will turn "underground" again. (my thougths)

Im not sure if I agree. I do agree with the punk-trance comparison, the tunes are built on structure that the majority of producers follow. Some tunes come along that break the mold, but IMHO some of the very talented producers are able to stick to that precitable and consistent mold, and still be good to listen to. That's just my opinion and maybe there's a lot of u out there that get bored with the same old synths and strings just arranged differently. But at the same time, trance gets a lot of attention in european countries, and a fair bit over here in the UK. So because of that I don't think it will die for a long time, nor do i reckon it will be taken over by prog (i hope to god that it doesn't!)
