Can open headphones make up for speakers?

OK suppose I'm out of my home studio for pretty long time and have no access to my speakers. Can this lack be compensated by a pair of open headphones?

of course but just make sure you do the final mix on proper monitors too. most of my mixes where made on headphones, later to realize that they were very dull, very muddy and incredible bad balance, probably due to ears adjusting to my headphones and tracks too quickly. in order for it to work i think you really need to compare alot to other music you know sound good.

Yes, you usually want to use both speakers and headphones. For headphones, I use the Sony 7506's which are close ended and when I mix and master, I use those but you also want to make the track sound as live as possible and that's when your monitors. I use the KRK 6" speakers and also use a 10s sub.

I hope this helps

Paul

the 7506 isnt at all good headphones for mixing, just a tip. they are very rounded warm sounding making everything sound ok until u actually test on a real system finding out that you have mostly made a track sounding like a megaphone.

oh and subs can be difficult too, but if set up properly no problem.

@Cocaine and MSZ: how about Daniel Kandi who claims to finish some of his tracks on a laptop with a pair oh headphones and ARTY who says that has to finish most oh his tracks on the road using a pair of open headphones?

Sounds like you sold yourself even before starting this thread. Just do what you want and be the next ARTY, if it truly mattered to you, you would test it everywhere.
