I want to get a simple DVS setup going at home but seeing as I have a good quality 6 in 6 out soundcard (echo audio fire 4), I don't want to pony up for a lower quality interface just to DJ with.

I remember there were systems like Miss Pinky which used timecoded vinyl and whatever soundcard you had but does anyone have any experience or suggestions with systems like these?

And, no I'm not going to buy serato or a crappy NI interface just to DJ with.

If I'm understanding this wiki article right; Imageline Deckadence, Adion DjDecks, Mark Hills xwax and Mixxx are all 'software only' dvs solutions.

Thanks mate, but I'm not looking for a software only solution - I want to use timecoded vinyl with my existing soundcard.

It seems Miss Pinky is the only system that let's you use your own soundcard, but from what little I can tell, you have to use max/MSP patches etc which I don't really want to get in to.

Anyone used miss Pinky or other DVS systems like this?

From what I gathered doing some more research, The others supported using traktor/final scratch etc interfaces with their software, but I think mixxx is a bit more lenient in that area.

I'm guessing you'll have best luck doing this project on a Linux machine, due to there will definately be some tinkering that has to be done, and we all know how easy it is to customize OSX, or even Windows for that matter.

You can use non proprietary soundcards for timecode based mixing with Serato and Traktor


To summarize, it's first of all called ghetto timecode:
-aggregate your soundcard, rename if to appear to be a NI card ( NIIO4/MORMONEY or whatever they're called)
then setup traktor to use this aggregated/renamed sound card.

this works with older versions not the most recent ones I don't think.


ps: there's nothing proprietary about the soundcards for these apps, you just need in theory a certified one so that can be a mixer or a soundcard(the cards being from the mfr usually)

Yeah, I've been under the impression that they were shitty audio interfaces that basically just was a dongle.

Regarding the ghetto timecode, that is cool as hell and when I get my tt's back I'm gonna try it

Holy fucking shit! I was wondering if that was the case but I thought they would have somehow limited it in the firmware and had not idea it would be simple as renaming your fucking soundcard.

So can you hlp me clarify this: from a quick search on the internetz, I can use my 6 in 6 out Audiofire 4 with timecoded vinyl and from what I gather Traktor Scratch Pro?

All I need to do is rename my soundcard to audio8?

I actually prefer serato so is there anyway to use serato without their $300 dongle?

Serato? Won't work.

If you want to use software that isn't pirated (I'd think it'd be hard legally purchasing outdated software), I'd suggest you take a look at the link I posted in my first reply. I'm considering trying some of them out myself actually, vinyl timecode with vst effect rack sounded pretty f'n rad.

I found and read that thread during my internet search but unfortunately by page 10 it turns in to an absolute shitfest of twats talking about the merits EULA's and hardware hacks and software usage agreements, and whether doing this is illegal and who is going to be subject to foreign rendition for using ghetto timecode. Had to wade through 8 pages until I got to the easy bit:

I tried out the Deckadance demo yesterday, only with my mouse though, but it felt like a solid piece of software and the vst support was fuuuuuuuuuun.

For DVS I think maybe Mixxx would be a better contender than Virtual DJ *shiver*, I think.. The vinyl part builds on xwax, so it's solid as a brick and it seemed feature rich as well and it reads all kinds of timecode vinyls.
