I didn't go to a DJ school.
I just think that it's a waste of my time and money because it's best to learn how to mix alone..................
if you're already pretty good, then I think that if you practice, you'll perfect your skills better than a DJ school
just my thought...

I haven't been to any, and I dont intend to, either. But if it weren't for the money, it seems like it would be a good way to get a feel for some equipment before you buy your own. Then again, if you are blessed enough to live in a location that has a GOOD dj equipment store--I'm not--you could just hang out in there and make your rounds and see what you like.

Hypersonic is right, though. If you have the patience to do it yourself, you dont really need to pay to have someone else show you how to start. In my opinion it is best to spend time with the equipment on your own to really get a feel for it and to get comfortable with using it so you can move on to bigger and better things.

I went to a school to get lessons for the same reason as you to perfect my skills. But they couldn't help me because one you learn the basics of beat matching/phrase matching/key mixing/set building then it is up to your personal style. A school will only be able to teach you the above things. Perfecting your own style is something that is up to you. It is not generic and therefore can't be taught.

ah yeah, I have already got beatmatching down and I can easily throw down a set, i just was wondering if they could perfect my skills. I guess it is prolly a better idea to just develop your own style on your own, since there really isnt much else to be taught.

Hi everyone.

It sounds like not everyone knows a whole lot about this DJ school called DJ University. I know some stuff about it and was quite impressed about what its all about, but I dont know if its really a legit thing or not.

I dont know if everyone knows this already, but DJU does not only teach mixing and sneaky tricks to drop in your sets. They also have classes that teach practical things that you should know in the business. Since DJing can be a serious professional career, they treat it like a business.
Here are some classes they offer I saw from the website:
1. Customer Service - As it relates to Customer Relations.
2. Customer Service 101
3. 4k Power words for DJs
4. Commanding a Higher Price
5. Intelligent Lighting (sounds interesting)
6. Making a change for Professional Growth and Profit
7. Teach your customers to Negotiate.

Realistically, you dont have to be Einstein to be a DJ, so thats why these classes sound cheezy and illegit. They have a link on their site of all the classes they offer and it goes into sound reinforcement, weddings, marketing, lighting, etc. . . .

IMO, I think this is cool and it sure would prevent more ppl from selling their newly bought turntables just because they didnt know where to start with beatmatching.
I heard from someone that its pretty expensive, but i believe that you also get discounts on equipment and of course, I guess you might have an easier time finding a gig.
If the price was right, I wouldnt mind taking a class here or there just to learn the right techniques.
