Eschaton - Ohmnivorous LP [Omni Music UK]

One of the best Drum n Bass producers for me at the moment releases a nice change up. Here's some background information

quote:
The Ohm Series continues with label owner Eschaton jumping on board the roster. This LP pays homage to the non-drum and bass/jungle sounds that Eschaton grew up with in the early to mid nineties; deep analogue beats, breaks and ambient house. Each track on this LP has been a nostalgic journey for him, as he tried to create the vibe of those halcyon days; the innocence that has generally been lost. With a multitude of influences on display, from orbital and early Aphex Twin to System 7, Eschaton has thoroughly enjoyed diversifying into the past, a small trip down memory lane that has fired his emotions for compositions to come. Watch this space as The Ohm Series continues in unexpected directions.

Interesting blurb. Eschaton is a producer where I crate lots of his tracks but I don't end up buying many. They can be nice but they often feel a bit like set-filler. This does sound very promising though, I'll have to listen to the samples.

Also, he recently did a guest mix for Panaural on Future Music FM playing upcoming tracks on Omni Music. There's some tasty stuff in there, as well as a welcome dip into the darkside:

That's often the case with me too,. I'm not sure what it is but the tracks he puts out are pretty good but there's an element that keeps it from being great. Not sure if it's Omni Music's mastering standards being too in the mid-range but his release on Reminiscence Audio got the oomph they lack. I'll check out that show you posted, thanks.

Played through this today and I'll probably give it another listen before commenting but Samsara might be my favorite track...a nod to System 7, no doubt.

Ambient House die-hards should really get in on this, it even verges on Trance.

Yeah, the mastering on this album isn't fantastic. I was wondering if it was a deliberate attempt to recreate that early '90s sound, but I'm not so sure. On the intro to Jhana, which is a fantastic track actually, you can hear him leaning back in his chair in the studio or wherever just before he starts playing the guitar. Kinda undermines the widescreen atmospherics of the actual music when you can hear a squeaky office chair in the background. So I suspect it's just the label working on a budget.

The music itself is pretty nice. Like I said, the production and sound quality does have a slightly raw edge to it that feels authentic to the period being lovingly recreated, which could be deliberate or not. The second half is the stronger for me: Jhana, Sadhana, Samsara and Bhava are the highlights for me. As a DJing gripe, I do think some of the tracks are too fast at 140bpm. Even in the rave-y early '90s you wouldn't get ambient house at that tempo, which makes it difficult to mix these tracks in with the classics they pay homage to.

EDIT: Funnily enough, I saw System 7 live last weekend. They were performing under their Mirror System ambient alias, but the majority of the set was quite pumping "crusty tekno" style stuff that System 7 specialise in. I might have to make an ambient house tribute mix in light of all this throwback business, as this stuff is very close to my heart.

Those BPMs are quite high for Ambient House, but I think it was done to give the tracks a drive as there is a lack of moving forward...if the mastering was better these most of the tracks could have been really great.

When I first listened to Sadhana I really liked it but wasn't sure if it would stick. Such a beauty, 10 minutes of bliss.
