I think I confused "reference tracks" with tracks that influenced me.
Never used a reference track, in that case.
I'd generally first create a 303 pattern, followed by creating drum patterns around it. Then I'd tweak the 101 to fit accordingly, and add a synth/samples if available. Before I record the mixdown, I generally have a sense of the track's overall structure, and how I want it to play out. Sometimes I don't, and would just improvise with the available created patterns.
I especially liked to improvise when I used to get stoned. I'd feel all hyped up and would get all crazy with all my machines, tweaking everything and not spend too much time thinking about it.
