i thought it would be pretty cool to know what some of you guys use as a point of reference since it is all subjective wether it comes to just bouncing some ideas off of or overall mixing and what not.

if i made something even close to this i would be a happy man

dont really use reference tracks - sometimes if i find a nice mix i will try and make some music like the stuff in the mix - but i wouldnt be A/Bing between stuff

Usually I just play around with sound for hours in Omnisphere (I have a real problem with this its destroying my life ) and then hear something that just clicks and I visualize into a soundscape I want to make...

I have listened to certain tracks to try and reproduce a specific sound or technique in the song, but I don't think I have ever used a "reference track", so to speak.

I am the same way but usually I start with a basic percussion track. From that point, I goto what I like to call the "auditioning" phase of the arrangement. I will literally sit hours on end "auditioning" tones and sounds. Lately, it has been more atmosphere and higher frequency tones in which I try to find the "hook" first,then follow with the bass. A couple of years ago and I would have probably started with a bass tone over the drum track to start..but for some reason I am hitting higher frequency parts first these days.

I think I confused "reference tracks" with tracks that influenced me.

Never used a reference track, in that case.

I'd generally first create a 303 pattern, followed by creating drum patterns around it. Then I'd tweak the 101 to fit accordingly, and add a synth/samples if available. Before I record the mixdown, I generally have a sense of the track's overall structure, and how I want it to play out. Sometimes I don't, and would just improvise with the available created patterns.

I especially liked to improvise when I used to get stoned. I'd feel all hyped up and would get all crazy with all my machines, tweaking everything and not spend too much time thinking about it.
