I went backpacking all over Europe for 3 years when I was 19/20/21. Hands down the best thing I could have ever done for myself. If you have the opportunity to travel, fucking take it.

doing the whole backpacking thing is something that i've always wished i did. it just didn't come together. i'd like to still get around to it someday, but honestly i've got a really nice job (which ironically would allow me to finally afford something like that) and i don't know if i'll ever get the opportunity for a long extended trip like that. maybe a month or so, which i would still be happy with.

I started out with some money saved up from home here, but yep, I worked all over the place. Mostly in the UK because, as an Australian, I could get a working holiday visa there. The general idea was to work for a few months in one city, explore the surrounding areas while saving up some cash (the UK is super easy to explore because it's so small), and then heading out to Europe somewhere for as long as the cash would last. I managed a trip to South Africa for 2 months as well. Rinse, repeat for 3 years. I did get a few under-the-table jobs in countries I wasn't supposed to be working in, but those weren't so common. Mainly just doing bits and pieces of work in hostels and so forth.

I do 1 month a year backpacking through europe. I am in the same position where my job and finances doesn't allow me to just get up and take off for longger than a month. However, Im totally jealous about you getting up to move to Berlin. I love berlin so much. Classy by day grimy and crazy by night.

What keeps me in this concrete shit hole that is toronto is my family. It sucks being raised from such an amazing group of loyal people. I reall don't want to miss a minute of their company. Especially now that my parents are older and I'm watching my aunts and uncles health deteriorate. I really can't see myself leaving them when they need me most.
