Why are many people obsessed with translatability?

Like, more and more people are so concerned about their mixes on "consumer speakers".
In my opinion you should care about how it sounds on decent monitors and ignore what people listens to. And anyway I'm convinced if a mix is well balanced it'll sound good no matter where/what...

Monitors are for you to get a fair representation of the music. The idea is that if music sounds good on monitors it should sound good everywhere.

However, in reality that is not quite the case. Monitors just can not account for the heavy alterations (processing/eq/etc) some speakers make to music.

Furthermore, target demographs are a key factor. If you make pop music you want it to sound great on cellphones (usually mono) as well as shitty speakers.

If you really want to see where you mix is fucked, play it through your TV system.

The reason in that bad speakers that people use now are considerably worse than bad speakers that people used to us 20 years ago.

In particular, most mixes these days need to consider how bass is represented through laptop speakers etc.

Its handy to use a second set of speakers to reference & you can get a really crappy pair (or single) monitor to test the track to see how it will sound on lesser systems

I use one behritone c50 (€80) and its very handy for mixing & also good for producing when you dont want to shake the whole house with bass vibrations

Alan meyerson mixes gem scores on headphones.

This guy is arguably the most competent engineer. On the planet making most pros look sickly.

It is business. You master for your audience. Really is that simple. And producers audience should be iTunes but they seem to think djs are still relevant so you get people that mix for the club. This new thing I'm doing will have different masters for beatport. Less compression and rounder lows.

obsessed? as opposed to, say, not caring at all? like where you're presumably at? i think i care just enough, enough to know that it matters, but not "obsessed" to where it's how i design my tracks.

i make tracks for the club, if they sound good other places, cool. translate-ability isn't just to make sure it sounds good on other systems, it's an indication of GOOD MIXING

Never thought about that, I guess I just assumed that technology makes everything..better, guess that is not the case.
This is exactly what I went through (and still going through) without proper monitors. Although my senn 600 cans do a really good job at the isolation it still is giving me different effects when listening to other audio sources. Hell, my car,tv,mobile and computer speakers are the other options and I get a different response from all.
I think for me I have always wondered just exactly what IS the proper medium for listening and even if someone told you...how would you know?

The concept in itself is stupid. Things don't transfer. You either find middle ground or accept your audience is not using something. A great mix for a will sound good on b. A good mix for b is the same as a on be and maybe sounds better on c.

The inky thing you can really adjust so things translate is smaller narrower bass, less dynamic range and capped highs. But you are again only translating for the most common playback

There are guys releasing great sounding arguably better than pop mixes on dr dre head phones. You don't hear in a linear fashion, why would it matter if your monitors have attenuated highs. As long as you don't get hulls, if you know how your monitors sound and have that internal reference, it just doesn't really matter.

i mix with my 600s too, but also using two large speakers, theyre bascially like two speakers youd find in a small sized club....I think you want to have a fat kick drum and thats the most important, but also yo uneed clear highs and mids but no aliasing. aliasing will sound horrible on a good sytem....but it wont matter much on an fucking ipod speaker/

i think this is really important to talk about.

because you want to make sure your audience is hearing your music the way you hear it. if not then you are out to lunch.

like i know for a fact that not alot of people will even own hd600s phones, but they are the most clear sounding Ive ever had. i use my monitor speaklers mostly to check if my bass is getting distorted at high volumes.
