I was looking into this the other day. The incident itself isn't very interesting in my opinion. They appear to have been from a lower grade sports- and dance focussed college in Rotterdam, so you're obviously not going to find the brightest of minds there and the girl had allegedly been bullied and picked on for years before this incident. That shit's bound to happen, and it does in fact happen all the time as it has done forever. Big difference nowadays is the presence of all this publicly available footage which has lead to an interesting debate over the last few years.
In fact a few days ago a very similar video showed up, this time made public by the victim's mother.
Now I'm sure at least in this case the publicist had the best intentions, but I'm still quite weary off the effect these things can have.
In the boy's case, he was already arrested before the video went public. So the only point to it was to cause a big stir and have a bunch of internet warriors start a pointless manhunt which can only lead to very bad consequences for the boy and everyone involved. He of course may well be marked for life now, as there are always hoards of people who feel that they themselves are the only righteous force of justice, although it remains to be seen how long the public conscious will care about these things.
His mother is in danger as well, because it's obviously her fault as well according to the internet lynch mob, and there were false street addresses being spread online meaning another completely innocent guy had to be given police protection as well. And what about the girl? Does she want to be remembered of this for the rest of her life?
So what exactly did we gain from this?
A lot of people argue that it's a good thing to keep the awareness that bullying is still a thing out there, and that it's a problem that needs to be acted upon by all of society.
I just wonder if getting more clueless people involved, let alone the lions we've potentially let out of the cage is going to help anything.
It comes to a point were an already miserable situation is getting worsened for the sake of some personal satisfaction on the side of people that should have nothing to do with this.
