Playing 2 copies of the same track at once

I've never heard this on liveset or live event b4(or maybe I didn't know the DJ was doing it)

What does it sound like?...............and how do you do it (in technical terms)?

Thanks

If you do this it sounds a bit like flanger, though not quite as pronounced as an effects unit would produce. Here’s how you do it:

Then choose a cue point on Deck B (cue point is explained a bit more below, you should read that...) and release in time with Deck A. Correct any throwing-in errors. Now bring open the x-fader or the channel fader for Deck B depending on your set up so that both Deck A and B are live...Then, lady luck permitting, you should be able to hear the cool flanger effect. If you can’t then your doing something wrong. Start again and have another crack, you’ll get it eventually. Oh and in case your wondering what flanger sounds like, you’ll know when you manage to do it, it’s an unmistakable sound, it’s a sort of like a sci-fi type swooshy noise.

When doing this you have to be careful and closely monitor the mixer out put levels. You’ve got two tunes pumping out so your mixer will be bouncing in the Red LED zone if your not careful. Also, the more melodies playing the more you’ll notice the effect than if it’s just drum kicks and hi-hats etc. Your aiming to get it so the structure matches perfectly too, so it’s like this:

DECK A: Intro : Body : Break Down : Build Up : Climax/ Main Melody : Body

DECK B: Intro : Body : Break Down : Build Up : Climax/ Main Melody : Body

So to get it just right you need to be quick on your toes finding the right cue point and you’ll need to know them tunes well. Good tunes are ones that have plenty of small gaps in the beat before starting a new phrase or highly memorable parts. A good place to start is with a tune like Mauro Picotto – Baguette. That’s got plenty of places for easy cueing.

As with any trick, it helps to have multiple copies of a track and more than 2 turn tables or CD players. That’s why most of the really good set-ups, ie. Super clubs have 4 Turntables and 2 CD Players.

Anyway, sorry for the long post!
Remember: practice makes perfect, but most of all have fun

It works because each copy of the tune has minute differences in the waveform, which you don’t normally notice when just normally listening.

The above was posted by me in a thread about Turntabalism & Tricks in trance. Hope it helps!

Many Djs that mix rap do this alot.....I as well as other call it "Cuttin the Sh*t up"

hehe......basically u get the Acap., The Instr, and the Reg version of the trk. 2 tables work great put u have to be quick to switch b/w record sides. 3 tables are better because all u do is switch bewteen songs through mixer......

So u have

all the trks playing all at the same time.....all u do is switch between the songs to get ur desired effect.....can come up w/ some nice combos if everything is in the right place and time.....

the only reason i would think you would do this is for either an effect like echo, flanger, or delay. or if you were juggling the records, but ive never heard trance being juggled. Dont think it would sound right.

theres lots of tricks you can do with 2 of the same records

for example you can get the normal flange effect by letting them play in synch...and just throw one of them off just slightly

however you can do other cool tricks like say for example at the end of the buildup you slam the crossfader over to the other table which is playing the same track at the beginning of the buildup

so essentially you're just making the buildup twice as long
it works great if done with the right type of song, and when its done in perfect timing

oh i love this sort of stuff its so fun!!!

if anyone here thinx this sounds shit with trance just get two copies of too many times - kai tracid and one beat delay it you still get the flanger effect which sounds better than the ones on samplers (like on the pioneer dj600) plus you get echo so everything is said twice one beatlater and thats not the best wait till the beat kicks in after the first builup the melody goes crazy!

if you stil aint happy get two copies of vannessa mae white bird cosmic gate remix and one bar delay them... once again flanger effect and when buildups come every four beats fade over to the other deck so that everything happens twice!!! its so much fun and completely changes the song!!!! plus if you like structured chaos wait for the middle of the second breakdown where it changes into sort of break beat bit... tis very nice!

id love to have 3 decks so i could do this in the middle of sets alot easier... but i have worked out a way to fit it in with two decks at the end of "cutting the shit up".... just cut fader across to one side and then remix other record in again at an earlier point then cut across to that track asap and then mix in new song... it mean the one song goes for a while but f*uck its worth it!!

what other tricks people got up their sleeves??

I have, and in the hands of someone who knows what their doing it can sound amazing.

As for other tricks up our sleves, there was a big post about this a while back here in the DJ from called Turntabalism in trance or something. Have a read of that, that was quite good and contained lots of cool ideas, if you can’t find it I’ll post the link.

Thats funny there is a post about this topic because ive been a battle dj for the last 4 years and this past year all ive been doing is spinning trance. As for juggling trance its pretty hard because the Bpms are too fast but it is possibe and with the right records it can sound pretty cool and unique.

GREETINGS,

BRETT
