Ok, here's the story. I've been spinning for just over 2 years now. I'm in the middle of taking politics in Univ. Do you see were this is going? There is nothing I want more then to DJ professionally. However because of school and all that jazz I haven't even close to given it everything I have. Should I?

In all honesty, I couln't be a resident yet, however I do think I have potential.

Drop out of school? Dedicate my life to promo tapes? Does risking everything result in success? Is that what it takes? Or is being safe the road for me? Advice, please.

Dude, listen to what you're saying ! ... Very VERY few DJs are able to make a living by doing the DJ thing, most have normal day jobs to support their passion. So stick to your studies and spin every free minute you have. I'm facing a similar situation right now and that seems like the best choice. Don't waste your future chasing a dream.

I'm thinking about an example like professional football players:
Obviously there are more professional football players than professional djs (unfortunately), and even countin' on it, being a football player is not as respected as it should be, and u know that in case of djs (incluiding my own) it's worse!!!!!.
It's very hard to tell to someone that u r a professional dj and that this one takes u seriously (special if this person knows nothing about the electronic movement).
Well, in case of football players, the most of them have studied an universitary degree, and they are thinking about the future of themselves as post-football players.
In my case I decided to stop studin' last year (thinking about djing and the like), but I realized that I need to have a background career, so I'm studing computing systems and I hope I can mix it with djing, if not, I'll have something to keep a way of life.
Being a good dj means a very great effort, but also u need to be lucky (as in every way of life) and some skills in moving yourself troughout this alternative world. Doing all by your own effort is very thankful, but a very slow way to get what u want.
Well, those were a lot of words...., it's my very own point of view, but I hope it serves u.

STAY IN SCHOOL!!!! By all means! You'll be graduated before you know it and trust me, there will still be vinyl and music and turntables when you're finished with school. Besides, even if you can only devote a little bit of time now and then to spinning, you're going to be all that much better when you can finally give it your all. But it seems like these days EVERYBODY wants to be a DJ. Some have what it takes .....and a lot don't. Dropping out of school would probably be your biggest mistake. And when you finish school, if you get into spinning and it doesn't work out, you at least have something to fall back on. And if it does work out for you.....the more power to you. Believe me, even though you might feel like you could spin records for the rest of your life, it will become old to you after so many years (as does anything you do day after day after day). The last thing that you want to happen is for spinning to become boring. At some point, you'll want and need to take a break from it. I spun (for a living) for over 15 years. After taking a break from it for a few years, now I spin as a hobby and am loving it once again.
I'm glad I had something to fall back on in the meantime.

Yeah - do not quit college.

If you have a degree it's easy to get a job. If all you can do is DJ - that's all you'll get.

Quitting college to work on promo tapes would be rediculous!

Stay in school...as much fun as spinning is...it's not life supporting..unless you are touring to cities every weekending making $X,XXX per gig.

Judge Jules studied law and was becoming a judge I believe before music pulled him away from his studies. Now he's a well known DJ. I personally don't recommend pulling out, and by posting this I'm not glamourising the situation, but from this example anythings possible! Just unlikely...

Im a Dj in school....what i do is work my ass off at school all wek then when weekend come i spend most my time Dj at parties. I dont plan on making money off DJing but i love to do it so...doing both could be done!
