Meat187 - Black Moon [Futurepop]

Time for something new! I recently started to explore Futurepop a little, which is an awesome blend of elements from Synthpop, Epic Trance, EBM and Industrial. Despite all the lyrics about pain and despair I find it quite uplifting and danceable. Some of it sounds like Cheese Trance with male emo vocals.
Also, kudos to anyone who gets the movie reference. It even has a unicorn in it!

Tracklist:

01. Neuroticfish - The Bomb
02. Icon of Coil - Everlasting
03. Icon of Coil - Access and Amplify
04. Melotron - Erwartungen
05. Neuroticfish - Velocity
06. Chrom - Memories
07. Code 64 - Without you
08. Mental Discipline feat. Felix Marc - Fall to Pieces
09. Icon of Coil - Former self
10. Bruderschaft - Forever
11. Mind in a Box - Amnesia
12. Assemblage 23 - Document [Endanger Remix]
13. Frozen Plasma - Crossroads [Mental Discipline Remix]
14. De/Vision - I'm not dreaming of you [Nevarakka Remix]
15. Bruderschaft - Return [Imperative Reaction Mix]
16. Melotron - Kein Problem

Awesome. I was wondering why there were never any EBM or aggrotech mixes around here despite the genres incorporating many trance and techno elements. I feel like the mixing style could use some work though. The first two transitions feel abrupt and like they're from a hard trance set, I think ebm djs tend to either not beatmatch much and slightly glide their tracks into each other near the ends, and not a harsh 20 second transition with the beats matching. I'd probably need to look up some examples to compare though. It doesn't affect the mix too much, but it's definitely an area for improvement. I feel like with the genre, despite the hard backing beats, the focus is meant to be fairly strongly on the vocals, and the mixing should show that. The third and fourth one was much better though. I didn't really like the direction it took near the end of the into the mix though, it gradually faded more and more into vocal trance and out of the ebm sphere. Once back it was good again though.

Overall it's a cool mix, I guess I have a preference for the harder/more ebm stuff but even with the vocal trance bits in it it's pretty enjoyable.

Many thanks for the feedback.
However, I don't think I fully agree with your comments on the mixing, aside from the mere technical execution, where surely I'm not a particularly great DJ. But when it comes to how the genre is handled I did some research and there are a couple of different approaches due to the many influences in the genre. Some do what you call "slightly glide their tracks into each other near the ends", but that seems hardly like mixing to me so I went with what's my perspective on the genre, and that's a trance-influenced view. Coming as a "foreigner" to this genre I believe it should be presented and mixed based on the elements I can connect with.
That's also the reason for the stronger vocal trance orientation towards the end. I see your point and agree that the mix could be more concise and dense without it. Indeed I did consider skipping tracks 11-14, but decided against it for a similar reason than the one explained above. I'm a trancecracker and cheese-lover, so without that part this wouldn't feel like "my futurepop mix" but just a random one. I could just play any of the ones I downloaded and there'd be o point in making one of my own.

Its mixed ok Meat, wouldn't worry about that.

A lot of the futurepop and stuff like this can be difficult due to some weird drum beats, so I tended to actually focus a bit more on the synth melodies and key when transitioning rather than drive yourself insane beat-matching.
Personally, I would have also ramped up or put in some slower tracks to change the tempo up/down a little as its a bit flat in terms of how it goes through the list like a dance set.

Which is a fine list indeed.

That said, had a lot of happy memories listening to this since I managed to catch Icon on their reformation tour a couple of years ago, plus you used Document, which is an all time favourite tune.
I can sing-along to most of it!

Serious though, I love this stuff...probably a German thing. I'd say this a pretty good go at mixing this kind of stuff togther. Like Lilith stated, some of the tracks drum can throw off a blend. I assumed these types of tracks much like seminal Trance aren't very DJ friendly and you have to use a lot cuts(fader swaps) to keep thing going.

Could have been smoother, but I was just expecting a hits-fest. Not a bad thing though.

Thanks guys!

Lilith, you're right that I could have brought the energy down a little in the middle. I typically do that in other set, but as this genre is rather new to me I just played all the nice tracks I found in a row.

Document reminds me heavily of some vocal trance track, but I can't pin down which one.

This is a good set of darky melodies. It was fun listening to it, as much as it is possible considering the style.

The mixing, I'm used to it, so I love it in this new adventure of yours. So, I guess, props for consistency?

Thanks for the share, man.

I would not hate you at all if you sent me a PM when you post a new mix up.
