Collateral circulation. Over time, in a stressed heart with blocked vessels, the heart circumvents or develops new pathways for blood flow. But of course, all that does it buy a little more time before the inevitable happens. The reason an LAD infarct is usually lethal is because the left anterior descending artery supplies a critical bundle of nerve fibres with blood flow; stop blood flow, stop nerve innervation, stop heart. But yeah, he would have survived because being such a fucking slob for so long he likely had enough collateral circulation to sustain him until he got treatment.

So if you have coronary artery disease you should just let yourself go to buy some time?

I obviously don't wish any ill on the guy, and hopefully he can recover and make the necessary lifestyle changes. But fuck me is he a shitty film-maker. I used to live with a guy who adored Kevin Smith, and I ended up seeing the majority of his films. Absolute amateurism, for the most part.

Lol of course not. Collateral circulation is just one factor, albeit a very important one.

That’s really interesting that the body will do that. Kind of has its own redundancies built in.
