My family wants to buy me a camera for Christmas.. just a beginer one that can take nice photos so my kids childhood doesn't exist only on low resolution cell phone pics. Any suggestions? My dad was thinking about picking up a Canon EOS REbel T5 EF-S would this be alright? I'm mostly interested in Nou and Stu's opinion lol..

I like the Rebels. I started on an older Rebel. They can pretty much do anything and are a really good entry level camera body. Plenty of lenses from Canon, both EF and EF-S (EF lenses are designed to work on full frames, but they work fine on EF-S bodies, just a bit more "zoom" on them, some people even prefer them since it uses the "best" part of the glass).
Poke Citric too, she started on a Rebel as well, though I know her opinion of Canon has changed over the the years a bit.

The wife started her Digital SLR journey with a Nikon D50, which she eventually wore out. We're now on a Nikon D3300, and I'm telling you, it's hard as hell to make a shitty pic with that camera.

Are you really sure you want to carry around such a big camera?
Most of the pictures of my kids I do make using my 13mp smart phone as I have it with me all the time. And I'm aware the lens is the most important part of a camera.
Good compact camera's are something in between, but still small enough to carry in your handbag.

Imhop you don't need a DSLR and it would be a mistake to get one. You're more apt to miss important pics because you'll won't want to lug it around. There are a variety of compact intermediate cameras that will kick a cell phone's ass without being cumbersome, tricky to operate, and expensive to lose.

Yea, Weiner you might want to look at mirrorless cameras too. They are fairly new, have exchangeable lenses, and take very high quality photos (better than point and shoot). They aren't as action oriented as a DSLR, more menus, less knobs and buttons, but they are a lot more compact.
My brother has a Nikon mirrorless he uses.

This is a good point. Although a DSLR makes magnificent pictures, there are times that they are simply too heavy/cumbersome. But, with the prices on a good, entry-level DSLR being what they are today, you can usually invest in one plus a good point and shoot for the times you want less bulk.

Thanks for the feedback! I already have a Sony cyber shot but it's limited and I was hoping to pick it up as a hobby as well.

I started on a Rebel too (though it was called a Canon 400D over here). Most of the Canon and Nikon entry level DSLR bodies will be pretty good. If you want really good quality images, then the lens you're using is more important than the camera itself, IMO.
