I certainly wouldn't have paid $60 for any of that if I had walked by.

The first buyer, 4 hours later, was an elderly woman who bought 2 pieces for her grandkids, after haggling for a 50% discount. College education secured, and then some.

not really a fan of banksy tbh, more of a robbo type of guy

in terms of art and value, i pick up retna, jose parla, jr lith's, cost/revs editions, saber awr, and if im lucky a takashi murakami..i'm still searching for one lith from murakami

art has more than a dollar value and banksy feels like a fad/niche that I don't care to associate with

follow those sheeps, prefer the under rated

besides no one knew banksy before 2009 and everyone definitely knew about him after the 2010 premiere of ETGS. I actually was put onto him around 2007/2008, finally saw him real life in Rome back in 2008 at the stairs at trilussa - can't find the pic but it was a monkey stencil sitting on a swing behind a cove of vines on the left hand side of the wall next to the stairs.

After Rome I caught most of his work when I visited my friend in Brick Lane in London. It was an AMS-ROME-LDN 'backpack' trip but I chanced on Banksy in Rome and then got the full on view when I arrived in London.

Still I think there is too much attention for someone who simply stencils his work, those of which end up having walls/doors removed just to preserve the art.

You know the rules of street art, nothing is sacred..art is for the streets!

What the fuck are you going on about?

No one knew Banksy before 2009? In Europe he was already everywhere, when I moved to LA in 2007 his shit was all over the streets.

Too much emphasis on someone that "simply stencils his work"?

Do you actually know anything about his work other than the stencils?

It's like saying Matisse is overrated for a guy that just cuts paper.

Or picasso is a bit overrated for a guy that draws with crayons.

In fact do you know anything about art?

How about any one of his several dozen sculptures? How about his pencil drawings, of which there are hundreds?

He's always said he was a shit painter so he avoids it as a medium, but his work spans a lot more than a bit of cheeky graffiti. I could name 15 guys are better grafitti artist, but that's not the point of why Bansky is so popular or his art is so well received.

In terms of being an artist, Bansky is a genuine one in that he works with all sorts of mediums, including doing performance art. He also gets my respect for being a daredevil street artist. I don't think he makes a penny out of his street art that was found, appropriated and sold for a shitload of money. But the point of this thread wasn't so much about Bansky as an artist as it was about hitting the lottery on that one particular day in NYC, thanks to Bansky.

you don't want to get into it with me on art homie, i know exactly what im talking about

state side no one cared to know banksy even after west bank, as I said before I'm more of a robbo guy. Sculptures and Pencil's? You're going to tell me a london phone booth is at the top of his revered work? 2006 sotheby fetched 1.8 for the hirst piece

he's still NOT ANYWHERE near the interest of the artist I like, regardless of the price, regardless of his message, regardless of him putting a stand in CP selling his art for $60 when it's auction value suprasses 6 digits. I frankly don't care for him...

kaws, koons, murakami, retna, futura, and a whole cast of others have way more of an artform that can be appreciated outside of displaying politically inciting works of art

in other words, shit is lame and it's ok if you like it and want to defend it, you lame also

It's Still A Young Team and Mr Starting Over are the only real 2 pieces that I want and that could be had at a decent price just I'm sure those 10 and below are in private collections

Preferably #'s 8-13 I only see 30's or higher

My Japanese American art history professor circle jerked Murakami a lot. Never saw the appeal to his pieces.
