Me again, recently I posted about my ON/OFF switch messing up. I managed to get the fix not I have a problem w/ my base/tonearm area. What is happening is when I'm playing a record (there is no scratches what so ever on the record) when the tonearm gets to a certain position it starts to skip or the tonearm jumps back to a previous section of the record and keeps doing it over and over again.

I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing wrong w/ my needles nor records. I think the problem is that the area is somewhat loose, meaning its not firm or "locked to position" so it kinda wiggles in place. I noticed that on my other table that there is a solid connection w/ the base and it doesn't wiggle around. How would I go about taking care of this problem. I have taken the 1200 apart so I'm ready to start operating.

Also, if I can not fix this problem, will taking the table to a service shop work.

Did you try just tightening the top screw in the tone arm stand?

And Have you checked if your anti-skate was set to high?

u know the little lever thing u pull to make the tonearm go upwards, instead of just lifting it up. well chnces r u need to tighten the thing that pushes the tonearm up when u pull that lever. coz the same thing happened to me before.

if all else fails, i suggest putting it back together, hide all the evidence and take it to a qualified repair shop

DJ-Kuza- yea, I check those.....tighten it to where the edge of the screw is chipping off.....gotta replace that.....

The anit-skating is set at 0, this is where its been before all of this started to happen.

DJ-Fuq- thats already tight too.....tried to tighten more but that was not teh problem

DJ_Shockwav- thats what I plan on doing at this point, I have all these pieces laying around and knowing me, I might forget where they go


But this is another way of explaining the problem.....where the anti-skating lever is.....you know the metal that it hangs from. I can put my hand there and wiggle the whole tonearm assembly around and this is not suppose to happen. I do the same thing to my other deck and it stays firm.

I"d take it to a reapir shop if you can' tighten it yourself.

Freakin, just screwed the tonearm think up.....now its not staying in place.....I'm gonna leave it alone and just wait to find someone else to fix it......thanks for the help TAs....

Tighten the top screw??? Now thats a brilliant answer!!! why not tighten the side screw too?? They do the same thing

The problem is your tone arm. It has what is called a "Gimbal" suspension. This allows the arm to go up and down( side screw) and left and right (top screw) These are actually bearings, 4 of them. They are not user adjustment screws. They have to be precision adjusted. You can tighten them as a quick fix but it will get worse.
You need a new tone arm around $100 CDN. There are 4 tiny wires to solder in.

I assume you have balanced your tone arm correctly???

Grab your tone arm and gently "tug" it. It sould not have any play in it. Try it in different areas relation to the platter. Thats why I don't let rookies on my wheels. The tonearm is fragile, some people don't understand.

Opps.... I left out....

The screws have an outter screw (Locking screw) and an inner screw (adjustment screw) If you adjust it youself, loosen the Outter screw first!! This will enable you too adjust the inner screw.

The problem most likley will not be solved by tightening the screw(inner) but loosening it!!

Make sure when you loosen the Outter screw that the inner screw doesn't move with it. If it does make sure you know the original position.

I did tighten the top screw and what happened was it screwed over even more......so I had to untighten and find a perfect balance.....DONE

The problem is that the whole assembly moves.....ok u know where the base is (the black part0, where you can control the hieght of the arm. Then you have the tonearm assembly coming from out of that (the silver metal). Right where the black & silver meet, This is where my problem is....it seems like there was a tiny space formed there and now the metal part wiggles around. I was able to slide a piece of paper in between this slit and it helps alittle.

I don't know if that made since....write back and let me know.

I need to know more about your wheel, was it used?? Where did you get it from?? Don't hide anything from anybody, it will cause them more time time to isolate the problem. Time is money.

I am assuming these are used, sorry to say miss-used. The outside rubber (or whatever material) ring has an internal and external "acme" (imperial term) or "trapazoidal" (metric term) screw thread. (The Japanese use what is called a JAS standard (term) which I seldom see in the US and Canada) The tone arm base has the external thread and it is screwed to the main body of the cast aluminum body. You can't see these from outside. It has a lock lever that pushes all three threads together not allowing them to move. It takes up the backlash or clearance between the threads.

I can only think of two reasons why this is happening.

#1 the outside rubber ring is not threaded in the correct position in relation to the tonearm base or body.Either it is threaded too high or too low. The threads are not engaged. ie they have been spun up too high or too low. I don't see how this could happen though unless the tonearm assy' was totally dissassembled completly and put back together by somebody seriously high on model glue.

#2 NOT GOOD... the height adjustment ring was never locked or came loose and never attended to. They do come loose trust me!! A loose thread will wear itself out in time. The Lock only "clamps" one area of the thread. If the Threads are worn it may not even lock at all.
