Just put a turbo on my BRZ

This is the way the car should've came from the factory, it doesn't ruin any of the great aspects of it. It's still a wonderful driver's car on a great chassis but now it has the power it always needed.

Just got it back 2 days ago, it dyno'ed at 275rwhp @ 10psi, so based on dyno's of factory BRZs that should be around roughly 342hp at the crank. It's a daily driver so this is more than plenty for the little 2700lb car, it's still tame enough for traffic if you're light on the throttle but get heavy on the throttle and things definitely get dramatic at full boost so it has plenty of fun factor too.

yeah that's the stock 2.0L boxer (Subaru's FA20D) except all the aluminum + blue pipes are part of the turbo kit.

nice pic! WRX STI's never get old, they only get more classic. great cars, what year is it and do you have any pics of the full car? i actually like the older bodystyles of the WRX STI's alot more than the new ones, same goes with Mitsubishi Evo's.

05 i think, JDM spec C.

i like the even older bug eyes too.

how much was the turbo kit? it could definitely be a future car for me. chris harris gave the GT86 model a very good review.

Gorgeous, I love your WRX STI.

It was $3000 USD, it's the SBD turbo kit. There are threads about it over at ft86club.com. I read through all the threads I could find before pulling the trigger on it. There are definitely alot of options out there for FI with the BRZ/GT86/FRS.

only thing putting me off a RWD is i live on a big fuck off hill. if it snows, it is very tricky to negotiate. other than that... drifting all the way to work sounds great

i definitely wouldn't go back to FWD... pathetic.

yeah that sounds tricky for RWD. it's definitely a great drift car. with traction control off, it's really easy to slide the rear end out and hold it out without the car swinging around or fishtailing (as long as you have experience with going sideways). it's such a well-balanced chassis. I used to have a saleen mustang with way too much $$$ in mods and that car was a beast, the brz/86 platform is a breeze to control while sideways in comparison. with traction control on, the brz reminds me alot of the RX-8 in terms of handling which is a good thing. I had to get rid of that car cuz maintenance + poor gas mileage + it being a new car payment (it was an '04 RX-8 in 2003) just made it too expensive to own long-term. I was bummed when I had to trade in the RX-8.

i've never had the pleasure of driving an AWD car unfortunately. i'm a big fan of WRX's, Evo's and those late 90's 3000GT VR-4's but haven't ever had a chance to drive any of them. i've had 2 FWD cars ('99 & '06 eclipses) which are fine as ordinary grocery getters but i agree, they have no fun factor IMO.

My last car was a Mitsi Evo, Evolution 4 with Evo 7 engine, gearbox, drivetrain and was running 400bhp

How does it run now, now that you have taken the pipe out of the exhaust?

that sounds like a nice conversion! i can't believe Mitsubishi said they were calling it quits on the Evo, it's their flagship car. early rumors are saying that apparently it's supposed to be replaced by something similar except it's hybrid and no turbo. i guess we'll have to wait and see how that pans out. i'm all for hybrids and even electric cars like Tesla but i'm definitely sad to see the Evo go. they're definitely playing a risky game of alienating their die-hard Evo fanbase. hopefully it's successor is something impressive. McLaren's P1 did amazing things with hybrid technology by allowing it to run in a fuel economic way or by allowing the batteries drive the car harder, which makes me think of something like electric boost. at least that's what my impression is after hearing Jay Leno, Top Gear and other misc people talk about it. so what Mitsubishi is doing is definitely do-able but if they take that approach then i doubt the Evo's successor will be affordable to much of its usual fanbase.

the factory header was replaced with a manifold for the turbo. it runs great, turbo lag is only noticeable when i go from a dead-stop other than that it spools up really fast. the car is definitely much quieter now with the turbo.

i have an aftermarket catback that gave the BRZ a really nice sound, that low boxer rumble. it wasn't too loud, i wanted something that was loud enough for me to hear it real well from inside the car but not loud enough to hear it from a mile away. so in that regard it was a relatively quiet catback compared to most of the other aftermarket catbacks. but now with the turbo, it's way quieter than before. the turbo muffled the sound quite a bit, so it's definitely a sleeper at this point. you can still hear the exhaust note but it's just a little bit louder than stock. the main difference is the tonality of the exhaust which sounds quite a bit different from stock, it retained alot more of that rumble. i can only just barely hear the exhaust from inside the car, the turbo is much louder. but i'm told that the car sounds nice from behind.
