Brazil: myths and facts

Well, there was some other thread in which we were discussing about Brazilian girls and I started to wonder (and worry) about the way you guys see the country I live in.

So, what do you guys think about Brazil?

Anyway, here's a small faq (for those of you who are bored, otherwise, just answer my question ):

1) Can I speak Spanish in Brazil?

A: Not a very good idea. In fact, first try to speak something in Portuguese (we'll be happy ). If you don't succeed, try to speak in English. Then, if nothing else works, try Spanish (if you try Spanish first, it pisses some of us off). Thought they're similar languages, pronounce and vocabulary are different, and it may often lead to awful mistakes.
Ex.: "Vaso" in Spanish means "glass (of water, for example)" and in portuguese means both "vase" and "toilet". If you're thirsty and you insist to speak spanish, the only water you'll see will be the one in a great white porcelain vase

2) What shouldn't I say in Brazil?

A: We hate when people think we speak Spanish (Portuguese is not the same thing), our capital is neither Rio de Janeiro (if you watched "I know what you did last summer", you know it's Brasilia) nor Buenos Aires (which is the capital of Argentina) and don't ever say that the Wright brothers invented the plane!. Here, Alberto Santos Dumond is considered the inventor of the airplane (we consider the Wright Brothers as "the ones who invented the tripulated catapult"), and he's a national hero, so be careful with that

3) Why is Brazil the arse land? (Oh dear, I really didn't want to talk about, but since that's what we usually hear about the country, here's the explanation )

A: Unlike most Latin American countries, Brazilian population was formed by European, African, Native American and recently, Japanese/Korean people. These ethnic groups got together, and this blending became some kind of national pride. The African people who were brought here used to have large arses, then, even though some people look white (for Brazilian standards), they still have this... er... African heritage There's no such thing as Brazilian ethnic group, by the way.
If you go to the Northeast (Salvador, Recife, ...) you'll probably see lots of black people (I found it really strange myself). If you go to the South (Florianopolis, Porto Alegre,...), you'll feel you're in Europe.
Also, for those of you who think that Brazilian girls are sluts: there are sluts everywhere, don't generalise! Most of us believe that North American girls are sluts. Now tell me, is it true? Of course not, and it works the other way round too. Take Carnival as some sort of Mardi Gras. However, for some unknown reason, some people like to show that Brazil is the sin country

Tip: If you want to know the Brazilian sin city, go to "Porto Seguro" in Bahia (near Salvador)... this is the place where people go to get rid of their parents for a while and have some fun But take it easy, it's not slut-land yet...
