Breaking Beatport: Examining How SFX Entertainment Destroyed A Beloved Brand

Good article about the whole SFX/Beatport meltdown.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone describe Beatport as "beloved" before. It was shit for years before these clowns got hold of it.

Was going to say the same. Beatport got the market because they were the first and essentially bullied the others out with corporate methods ie. extreme networking, backroom brand/exclusivity deals and obnoxious advertising.

Bandcamp has done a lot for independent music, I'm not sure what Beatport has achieved, other than making money off pushing traditional major label methods on the dance music market.

Haven't released anything on Beatport for a couple years and have never really used it otherwise. What's the deal with it?
Also, Junodownload is a great site for electronic music.

for me beatport has been the easiest to use. lately I've been using both beatport and bandcamp,BC for labels that don't operate on BP. i wish i could just transfer all the labels i follow to bandcamp.

im not big on juno's layout and since I've stopped buying vinyl theres no point to use their digital store. eventually I've been planning to go vinyl only in an effort to stop buying so much digital crap that i consider decent and I'm on the fence about. i can't afford the vinyl decks yet so digital remains

Juno's site design is fucking mess. But beatport pro is even worse, it's borderline unusable. I wouldn't be surprised if the introduction has tanked their sales.

I've said this before but hardwax has the most usable site out of any music shop i've ever seen (instant page loading & soundfile playing, no clutter, all information on one screen, browsing & clip playing on the same screen, sensible categories, succinct descriptions) and their design hasn't changed since the 90s. Webdesign is just getting worse.

Yeah I've heard Beatport referred to in a number of ways, but none of them 'beloved.'

This may sound like instinctively hating a new design because you're just accustomed to the old one, but yeah, Beatport Pro is borderline unusable, and welcome features like multiple checkout crates don't at all make up for just how shitty everything loads now.

I just stick with Beatport Classic, and everything looks and loads just as efficient and streamlined as it ever was. I've also found myself searching on Beatport, but buying on Bandcamp when available.

Same here. Beatport is a decent database for cross-referencing. That's its one positive attribute. I do about 75% of my digging on Beatport and buy about 10% of my music there (the Beatport exclusives, basically). In 2016 I imagine a lot of savvy DJs do exactly the same. If they cut their prices by 20-30% they'd sell a lot more tracks.

Also, their WAV fees are completly unjustifiable in 2016. It boggles my mind that basically every retailer that isn't bandcamp still charges extra for losssless. Beatport takes the cake though with new+exclusive+WAV fees. I'm not even sure what their market is anymore. The casual market streams, vinyl has made a huge comeback in the bedroom DJ market and because of the extreme popularity of promo lists and networks I doubt the average pro DJ even spends much time on Beatport etc. anymore.

beatport pro is awful. if there was no option for classic, i would have made a switch. I'm starting to follow more artist on bandcamp, but its not so convenient. starting to make the switch because of DVS1's labels and lobster theremin having digital on there, but re following loads of artists is a pain especially with their layout. not a big fan of the multiple checkout either, but prices are fair. i still stick with 320mp3s though. i was hoping giegling would have digital downloads on hardwax or bandcamp but sadly no. what artists/labels have digital on hardwax that aren't in other stores ?

Giegling has never done digital distribution and i'm not sure they ever will.

There's quite a few labels that only offer downloads at hardwax, mostly smaller labels related to or distributed by the shop.

I can agree with you there. Beatport Pro's interface is...
