Dave King vs Jon Cockle - DanceLoveHub @ Brixton 414 (26/12/15)

Reconstruction of my back to back set with TAs Dave King (djdk) from Boxing day. It was as enjoyable as I hoped it would be, and the crowd seemed to love it! I played the odd numbers and dave the even, and this followed individual sets from us both too.

Hope you enjoy it, and let us know what you think!

Nicely done, gents. I'm sure if I was there I'd be having a blast listening to you guys.

I'll go in chronological order with your mixes:

Jon part 1

So this one was my favorite of the two, I would have definitely been really enjoying this one live as this style of trance is so BIG, you really get immersed into it. The set sounded really J00F-esque yet with your own twist that I love to hear. Programming was great yet I felt you possibly could have finished stronger here. Probably better that you didn't honestly, as it would be more difficult for Dave to follow. Still a great opening set.

Dave

This one has you written all over it, the high energy psybreaks and trance with just a twinge of acid. I liked how you kinda mixed into and out of the trance portions but unfortunately you lost me from Speed Me Up through til the end. I do like that track Fluke - Bubble (Burstbubble) but it wasn't really enough to make this set extraordinary.

I have a feeling that you were reading the crowd for a lot of these and you had the general idea that you wanted to mix in and out of the breaks and trance tracks, and I think you did this really successfully in the first half but not so much in my opinion in the second half. If you could have extended the mix by 30 minutes and gone back in with the psybreaks and finished out on that note then it would have probably been more cohesive. I also understand that Jon was going to be mixing trance after you so you had to keep that in mind as well. Well done considering the circumstances and I know I would have been rocking out to those breaks.

Jon part 2

I thought this mix got off to a bit of a slow start, as it was more or less just background music for me until you laid down the Cosmithex track. I really enjoyed the last 6ish tracks you played in this one, but the first bit was a little slow for me. I'm sure it worked perfectly for your crowd though, they are still nice tunes!

I bet this night was awesome, and I hope you guys had fun! I enjoyed listening to the music you played. Cheers!

Thanks very much for the detailed review mate! I'm inregued about your comment about my first set ending weak - I thought if anything I was guilty of playing a bit too banging before Dave, with the psy trance twist and the epic breakdown in 'Run'. I hadnt planned to play like that but the crowd were quite psy focussed so it felt right, and I know Dave is versitile

My second set, as you put it, is actually me and Dave both playing back to back. Glad you enjoyed the psy trance bombs at the end :-)

Honestly mate, "strong" for me is probably way too strong for most trance lovers I'm a psy-head through and through. 00.db is quite weak to me but that's just a personal preference kind of thing. I'm sure the ending of the first set worked for the crowd, and that's all that matters.
