Well, the best stuff will definitely not be the cheapest, and the cheapest will definitely not be the best!
If you are just starting out, then I would probably go with the cheapest (or close to) direct drive tables that you can find from a reliable brand name. A starter kit may be a good choice because some of them will have crappy mixers but decent tables. The mixer will probably be your first upgrade if you decide to stick with it.
Some things that I would make sure that the mixer has are channel LEDs so that you can adjust the volume levels properly, you will only need two channels, and a replaceable crossfader isn't nessicary becaues you'll probably replace your mixer before it breaks (again, if you stick with it). If you aren't sure if you are going to stick with it then don't spend more money than you are willing to put into a hobby that you will only spend x amount of time on. You'll have to deem that price yourself. If you are willing to spend a grand, then you have a bit of money to work with. The best thing you can do is pick out a couple of different tables and mixers and then price shop.
this system seems pretty reasonable for it's price, you get two direct drive TTs and a starter mixer. Headphones cables etc are all included plus a tutorial video is free with it. It doesn't include speakers, but chances are that you already have them anyway. Or with the other $300 you have, you can pick up a decent pair. hell you can even get nice computer speakers with a sub and have that work for you, depending on how you want to set things up. (then you can at least get good use out of the computer speakers if you don't stick with djing). You also will have to spend $100-$100 on music almost right off the bat too, so calculate that into it too. Don't spend all of you money on the eq and have nothing to spin once you get it!
