Both in the beginning (around 2003-2006) but most music got digital later on which made me switch to CD's only

I've always kept to vinyl (1210Mk5's) and CDJ's (800's), recording live via a Vestax PMC 55 in to my Audiofire interface. It's about as pristine a signal path as I can get without spending another $10k for a 1% difference.

I am however desperately awaiting the release of the Phase DVS controller and I may well switch to predominantly digital when that comes out, if I can find a way to have a interface as minimal as possible (I've gone in to great detail before but my view is that staring at a screen phycologically disconnects you from "dance music" (which is what it is after all) so I literally want a tiny screen that shows me the track name and gives me the option to see a waveform - that's it. I've even been toying with the idea of making a Pi or Arduino box with exactly that.

I think traktor allows you to customize the layout so we'll see what the options are when Phase releases in a couple of months.

Nice man you are spending lot's of money on expensive equipment than! Cool to hear that some people are still playing vinyl! Nothing beats vinyl if you ask me! That is DJ-ing!

Vinyl sales are actually higher than digital sales for the first time in 15 years.

For Dj'ing I doubt it's as popular due to the costs and distribution involved, and I'll admit, just having all your tracks on two usb drives is pretty damn convenient, but there's nothing like playing on real deck with vinyl.


I'ev written a much longer post in years gone by but with the TA search being whatnit is, I can't find anything more than a couple of years old.

Basically, my thoughts are that the moment you look at a screen for DJ'ing, you disconnect the tactile processing part of your brain and that detracts from your connection to the music. I can say, hand on heart that every single time I've a seen a DJ using Traktor/Serato instead of working the decks of even CDJ's, something is lost, both in the connection of the DJ to the music and to the club.

There's a real tactile connection to decks that can be performed just using your learned techniques, like an autopilot, without consciously having to think about the function. A screen/laptop makes you think and use that part of your brain that doesn't act by itself.

I'm not one for jesus posing, fist pumping twats in front of the decks, but there's always a more grounded and innate connection when a DJ is just using decks and a mixer to affect the sound, rather than a trackpad/mouse to control an icon or slider which in turn changes the music.

I'm lucky in that i bought my 1210's MK5's when they came out and then the price skyrocketed.

My vestax PMC 55 took me years to find (it was actually discontinued in 2001 as it cost them so much to make it nearly made vextax go broke).

I then found a second one on Ebay - boxed, brand new - for $300 when vestax USA went under digital mixers were all the rage.

The 55 now goes for upwards of $1000 an even then it's probably one of the better value mixers.

thinking about grabbing a dj controller that works without a laptop but(dont even need an lcd, ill jedi mind tricks that shit), fuck those things are expensive, might as well get cdj1000s and a nuo2 or some shit and still save money.

I use 2 CDJ-800 mk2 that are still going strong in conjunction with an Ecler Evo 5 with FireWire into my MacBook Pro running Traktor Scratch Pro 2. The Evo 5 has essentially the Audio 8 built in so it’s Traktor Native. Everything goes through FireWire (which, I admit, gives me palpitations thinking down the road as FireWire is a dead format these days). But the setup now provides crisp and clear audio for me.

Wll as soon as Phase DJ controller is actually available, much as it pains me, I'm going to dump my CDJ 800's and just go full turntables for both vu=inyl and digital.
