yeah 320 is considered CD Quality im not sure about 128 being CD quality but i can tell you that 128 aint the lowest theres 96 and i think 64.

When more K-bits then more Memory will be to mantain the quiality.. yes, 320 is considered CD Quiality, But I suggest u go for 192 kbps, since 320 will take too much space on your hard Disc, and the human ear cant tell the difference (What I have read), of Course, is very important wich Encoder u are using.. I suggest u go for Lame Encoder.. I have hear 128 kbps tracks with a great sound.. and 320 kbps tracks with poor sound... so.. remember use a good encoder,

U can Encoder your Files in VBR(Variable Birate Rate)... so.. when the track needs more k-bits will use more.. and when doesnt need .. will use less.. u can go for a VBR between 192-320 kbps.. still I always encoded My Vinyls and Cds in a Static 192 kbps. but over the internet are many 128 tracks with a good sound.. but if u see a 96 or less kbits try to find another one.

Oh and 128 is not the lowest.. u can go for 8,16,32,64,96,112.....

yeah that helps alot. i use acid whenever i encode them into mp3s they give me lots of options but i will just use 320kbs to be on the safe side. oh and i did encode it on 192 as well as 128 and i can't tell the difference really.

192kbit refers to 192 kilobits per second. This means that for every second of audio, the mp3 will use 192 kilobits of space on your hard drive. A byte = 8 bits, therefore 192kbit/second = 24kilobytes/second

You've probably drawn the conclusion that this rate is important because it determines how much space on your hard drive a song is going to use, correct. However, if I were you I would not simply choose 320kbit when encoding all your tracks, because it's not worth it! For most people, it seems the optimal bitrate is 192kbit/s. For me, this is the case because I have used 128 and 160 in the past, and there has always been a noticable increase in sound definition when I've gone to 192. Increasing upon 192 won't give you nearly as noticable difference in fidelity, and the more and more you increase the bitrate, the less and less you'll notice the difference (you probably won't notice at all); therefore it's just wasting space.

See for yourself, encode a track that you've obtained from a reliable source (cd) at several bitrates and flip through them in your playlist.... from 96, 128, 160, 192, 224, 256....

CD quality is actually 176kbps, so if you encode at 192 mp3 or higher you're wasting space on your hard drive. @128 you lose a little bass, and 160 is pretty pointless. Either stick with 128 or 192.

shompton: the CD quality is not 176kbps.. just to let u know.

256 kbit/s is cd quality (in case of Lame or some Fraunhofer, not Xing)

people, just to suggest u what use when encode mp3s: Go for 192 kbps using the Lame Encoder, there is a VBR and its very good too.. u can use the R3mix technology.

Aldrian: I used to do that... Encoding at 320 kbps, many of my albums are in that birate, but let me suggest u just go for 192 kbps(What I do now) .. but is very important the encoder.. remember that., use LAme encoder.
