ok, there are lots of freeware VST's out there, a lot of people just use the freeware vst's.
www.kvr-vst has a MASSIVE archive of free instruments. There are also loads of free Vst, au, DXI etc effects out there.
Some good freeware VSt's that i use include synth one (a free nordlead ), triangle 2, triangle one, cheese machine etc, i have about 90 free vst and DXI synths.
hmm, hosts/programs. If you are a beginner, i would reccomend that you get your hands on fruity loops or reason. Both are great programs, a lot of people may say " go get cubase, it's what all the pro's use". Although cubase is a fantastic prog (so are logic, sonar etc), you don't need it to make good music. Some artists that use fruity loops/reason include cosmicman (yes, cosmicman), ppk, and loads more. If you learn them well, they are both powerful tools. for an example of how good fruityloops can be: www.mp3.com/lightworks , get "heart and soul", an amazing track.
Personally i prefer fruity loops, reason is too restrictive for me, without the DXI and VST plugin support.
anyhow, it really depends on the artist, you could have a massive studio, and not produce anything good, it really depends on how far you are willing to go, and if you have any talent .
Also, go and grab some free samples, there are loads of great sites out there.
Hope that helped :P
