When someone wants to release a brand new track, he makes a few acetate copies of it, and hands it out to some fellow DJ's, who in turn check whether the crowd likes the track.
It's fucking expensive to press vinyl in only a few (let's say 5) copies, making acetates is cheaper. When a track isn't received al too well, you don't lose the investment of making vinyl copies.
Only two disadvantages: the weight and the fact they wear out so quickly..
