i think i have a better chance of being an extra in a movie than being a dj for a club. it's hard competition out there. plus there will be billions of people that have way more talents and that whole vinyl vs cd is definately come into place.

isn't there a thing people can do for a living like making music for video games, or movies, or for commercials? i might start going to school for that profession. i have experience with acid and reason so at least i have a stepping stone in my hands.

yep it's tough.competition is massive out there.you just got to keep at it.play in front of your friends,get their advice on how you sound(preferably friends that like the kind of music you play thier more in tune with how a mix should sound usually)ask around and see if there are any house parties you can play at.(for free of course people like when they hear the word free)check your local college and see if there's an opportunity for you to play there(even better if you go to college)and the thing i think is the most critical which i'll be doing in a couple of weeks is record your own set into your computer so you can make a cd comp so you can review how you sound yourself.the more you play in front of people the more word of mouth will spread about you.for instance,someone my girlfriend knew wanted to have a birthday party for his girl at my girlfriends bar, and knew that i dj'ed so i told him i'd play at her party for free for the crowd experience.this was not really a trance crowd except for a few, so me and a friend worked some 80's trance remixes in throughout the set and it was enough to get the crowd going to mix it up some more.and when we finished he said we were great and gave us 50 bucks.50 bucks for something i would have done for nothing.it was a great pick me up and give me hope that i could possibly play at a club someday.

i've seen some VERY horrible djs
but because they know someone they're given a shot

get out and meet people
make a demo and put it in the hands of promoters
buy drinks, talk, have fun

that's what i did
i've met quite a few people
all i need is to give them cds

Oh how true is this. The only thing... if you are to become a club DJ you need to know everything and know how to mix everything. I found this out the hard way last year. I am lucky enough to know insiders and that is how i got a spot being a resident @ a club called Amnesia just outside of Chicago. Only problem. Trance doesnt fly here. ( which is why i moved back underground to the raves ) So unless people pay you alot to play trance... you may get a shot at one night, but depending on where you are..... you may have the dance floor empty. Dont let that get you down tho. Dreams are what build people and in all honesty it is kinda a bitch thinking.. wtf should i play next to keep the crowd going, a proven floor filler tho old or some new tune that may have 2 outcomes... dance floor mania or total floor emptier. But that is what is fun. Experimenting. If trance is your thing and you are in the states (dunno where el rancho is ) goto some good parties and pass out demos. Know the promotors and the party throwers. hell. offer to promote for them. Get to know em, give em your promo and you may have connections built by them.

All it comes down to is:

who you know...... they will either make you or break you.

Exactly. IMO some of the best mixes put are done by one type of DJ. The bedroom. They are not influenced by $$$ or anything else, they just churn out some of the greatest and flawless mixes

obvioulsy you wont become a club dj in Kenya... there arent any clubs...

This applies to where-ever in the world you are, more clubs means more chance of making it
