Would you sell out?
You do not have permission to vote on this poll.
Hell no. I love the music for what it is and the nice $ I'd be making at venues and off CDs, and the fun of doing it is more then fair recompense for me. 11 22.45%
Probably not. I really do love the music, but I might be very tempted for the money. Is making money so wrong? 25 51.02%
Fuck yes! If I can make extra money, then why the hell not? 13 26.53%
Total: 49 votes 100%

Would you sell out?

This poll popped into my head after reading the thread on the rumour of Oakenfold performing during the 1/2 time show of this superbowl.

So if you were a world renowned DJ, on top of your game or even riding the wave of success but not so big anymore would you sell out (ie. play at a superbowl or remix a pop or dance song) if the opportunity presented itself to you?

You guys have to realize that this is their job. While it is really sweet if guys don't 'sell-out' music, it can also mean they get no money and have to fall short on production etc. Just remember that music producers have a job to do, and part of having a job is making money. I don't think it is abnormal at all for someone to 'sell-out' music. Anyways, why the fuck should you care, there are hundreds of other producers, their name might not be tiesto but it doesn't mean that they are going to suck.

I'm well aware (as I think pretty much everyone else is) that there is money to be made by these producers/djs and thats fine and understandable. Its just a question to see where people stand nothing more. Also I asked would you sell out if you were a big name DJ - lets be honest, Tiesto or Oak aren't going bankrupt any time soon.

I think the main reason is most tranceaddicts or people who listen to electronic dance music are extremely selfish. They want to keep trance underground and for themselves. It makes them feel special and unique. When a DJ does something commercial, or "sell out," they feel as if they were betrayed. They would say, "How dare he for exposing ourselves to everyone. I thought he would have more respect for the music and his fans. Doesn't he stand for something anymore?" I say this mentality is very wrong. Thinking that mainstream=cheese and underground=good sound is very misguided. I say if you like it, then it is good, only to you. If I was a DJ, I would want to spread trance all over, underground and mainstream. I would be happy to see everyone in this world tranceaddicts.

it also depends on what u mean by "selling out". if a producer is approached by someone who made a more commercial or mainstream track and asked them to remix it, does that mean they sold out? because they brought their sound to a track that they wouldnt have before? who knows, it could be an awesome track, but because it would have mainstream success it would be frowned upon and people would say "oh thats shit, he sold out, what a crap track" just because of what it is and not what it actually sounds like. i agree with what titi said, that way of thinking annoys me a lot hehe. everyone bags ian van dahl saying its cheese, its shit. i havent heard the album and only know a few songs, but i think they are ok. i mean its fun to listen to on the radio, something to tap your foot to after all the rock or rnb. and i swear if you download "nights on java" you would be forgiven for mistaking the artist for another less "sold out" producer
