US seeks 'German regime change' over Berlin's anti-war stance:
weekly
Berlin, Feb 17, IRNA -- The United States government is pursuing a
'regime change in Germany', following Berlin's hardline anti-Iraq war
stance, the weekly magazine Der Spiegel reported Monday.
It cited a recent article by prominent US journalist William Pfaff
in the International Herald Tribune in which he said that the US
administration 'is seeking the political destruction of (German)
Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and a regime change in Germany'.
"This is the first time that a German government has taken a stand
against Washington and refused to back down. A chancellor who does
this must not, in the current view, be allowed to get away with it,"
Pfaff added.
He stressed that Schroeder's ouster was 'the real current priority
of the Bush administration'.
Berlin-Washington ties have hit rock-bottom over deep strategic
differences on dealing with the Iraqi regime of Saddam Hussein.
Germany has repeatedly warned America that any military attack on
Iraq would further destabilize the volatile Middle East region and
promote international terrorism.
