Usually the best DJ's (In my oppinion at least) play a veriety of different stuff. If you only play one kind of music, you can only play for one kind of crowd. The only DJ's who can really get away with being very narrow minded in their types of music are really famous ones, because they have fans that like a particular style of theirs, and that's what they come to hear. If your goal is to move crowds and show people a good time, and no one knows who you are or what you play, it's your job to work the crowd and see what kind of music they like, and react to them. Like I said, most of the DJ's I consider "good" DJ's do that anyway, regardless of their fame, because that's really what their job is all about.

Being a trance elitist is just as bad as being a "prog-head", the only difference is, here on Tranceaddict.com, you can get away with it. Just go to a record store and try to tell the cashier(who spins, say, DnB) why trance is the best and why almost everything else is shit. See how cool you are then.
